welcome to our special Harp Music Week, here at Musica in Extenso! I’m very honoured and I hope, that this week will be a beautiful event for us. 

My name is Lada Karasková and I will lead this week as an invited Guest-Editor. I’m a young musician and I play the mysterious instrument, the harp.

My first post for this week is about the famous 20th Century composer, Paul Hindemith.

Paul Hindemith

Sonata per arpa (1939)

This work is a rare example of a non-harpist composer writing a piece which is really idiomatic for the instrument, Hindemith uses it's whole range and characteristic harp techniques, such as arpeggios and harmonics. It's full of contrasts, at times it sounds almost archaic, evoking music from the antiquity, then it changes it's sound to modern. I suggest paying close attention to the harmonic structure. It should be also noted that the third movement is composed after a poem by a 19th century poet Hölty, the text can be found here in German and English: http://sites.siba.fi/web/harpnotation/first-concert
