Kathryn hadn't been to Lake George in quite some time, but after everything that happened, perhaps she could use something familiar and not life-threatening. The evening went fairly well. A nice dinner, a bottle of good champagne. They went through the first bottle, and Chakotay ordered a second on the yacht's interface. Conversation was stimulating and didn't go near the most recent events. All in all, a lovely dinner. But when the conversation lapsed into comfortable silence on the deck, staring up at the night sky, the episode with the vulture-like alien seemed to drift back into her mind. Why did it have to take the form of her father, of all people?
“Some days it makes me wonder,” she murmured over her glass.
“Wonder what?” Chakotay asked thoughtfully.
“If I should have buried my father's face further in my memories. I still can't stand that alien parading around as my father.” The more she spoke, the angrier she became. “Who was he to use my father for his own means?” She shouted, more to the lake than anyone in particular.
Immediately, regret at her loss of control seeped in. “I didn't mean to shout.” She stood, glass in hand, and walked to the tip of the prow, looking out. She felt more than heard Chakotay's approach.
“It's understandable. The alien took the likeness of someone you care about, someone you trust. And it corrupted that trust.” Somehow, he was always able to hit the crux of the problem.
“It just feels off. I want to direct my anger at the alien, yet the only picture I have of it is the one in my mind, the image of my father.” She shook her head as the line of thought trailed off. Chakotay gave her the space she needed, as always, and Janeway was able to contemplate the alien's words as well. The final taunts reverberated at the back of her mind. Of his threat to use her consciousness as a meal. A large meal that would stretch years, if her imagination was anything to go by.
Janeway shivered, and Chakotay wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Cold?”
She thought for a minute, unsure if she should share those intimate details. She hadn't even dared to transcribe them onto her report. Somehow, they were too personal. While it was important to know about this mysterious race, she didn't know if a threat, idle or otherwise, was something to point out.
“Kathryn,” Chakotay gently nudged her from her thoughts. Somehow, he had managed to place a blanket around her shoulders without her noticing. “You can talk to me. Off the record. You're just so distant. I know whatever is on your mind is bothering you. Let me help.” His offer was almost pleading, his eyes soft and soulful. Perhaps it was good to confide in him, if only to take it off of her own chest.
“He said that I face death every day. That one day, he would get lucky. That I would feed him for a long time. That he would be waiting for me until I walked into his matrix.”
“If I were him, I would grand stand as long as I could. There's no way to win against you in a sheer battle of wills. That's been proven far too often. If I were him, I'd go for grand standing.”
“Well, that was one hell of a grand stand. And a threat.”
“Yes, but the EMH has already done thorough testing. It isn't there anymore. It's gone.” Kathryn took a deep breath.
“How did you learn to be so calm all the time?”
Chakotay chuckled before answering. “Took a long time. Awful lot of practice. But in the end, it came down to one thing.”
“And that is?”
“I'm alive, and there's good that I can do.”
“That? Sometimes, that's the most overwhelming thing.” Kathryn stepped back, and Chakotay let her walk from the prow to the first seat she could find. “Get my crew home. Solve any problems we come across. Record everything for those in the Alpha Quadrant.”
Chakotay crossed over and knelt down in front of her. “And sometimes, you just have to give the day your best. There are those who lay comatose. Who die. Who can't do any of the things you can. And you do whatever it is you're capable of.
“In your case, you're a powerful woman. You can do almost anything. You could lay waste to star systems. You could chart new territories. You could do whatever you set your mind to because you are an extraordinary woman with immense talents.”
Janeway felt a blush creep up her face, despite her serious attempts to stop said blush. “Somehow, I don't feel like this is necessary.”
“If it reminds you what you are capable of, then it is. And I'm glad to help. You calmed the angry warrior, and anything I could do to offer the same peace is the least I could do.” He held both hands out to her.
It had been quite some time since they talked about a relationship, and something in her could not longer find a reason to fight. The alien was right. She could die any day. Chakotay could die any day. What mattered was whether they made peace with themselves and each other.
“Do you remember the conversation we had on that planet? After you told me about the angry warrior?” Chakotay nodded. “I said that I would be willing to have a relationship with you. You were kind enough to understand that I needed my space once we were back aboard the ship. And I've made my choice.” She placed her hands in his. “I want to be with you. We can't let it interfere with our duties to the crew. But if I die tomorrow, I want you know that I care about you.”
Chakotay moved one of the hands that gripped hers so he could stroke her cheek. “And you will always know that I care about you, Kathryn.” He stepped forward, giving her time to react or pull away, until he was inches from her. He knew she was shorter than him, even with heels on. But this was both familiar and different. They had kissed on that planet, but never on the ship. Something about it was terrifying and exhilarating. And then her lips were against his, and he couldn't keep still. He wrapped his arms around the woman he loved, one hand reaching up to brace her head, the other at the small of her back, holding her close, cementing his reality.
Kathryn, for her part, was simply glad that she had initiated the kiss. She'd been waiting for quite some time to kiss him again, and her hypothesis was correct. Kissing Chakotay simply felt right.
