The Last Full Measure (2019)

With 1917 still in theatres, I’m not sure if releasing The Last Full Measure in January was the best, or worst move the studio could’ve made. If you go in thinking this is going to be an edge-of-your-seat war movie… you’ll be disappointed. This is a dramatic film that discusses war and the impact it has on the individuals.

Based on a true story, Scott Huffman (Sebastian Stan) is doing everything he can to advance his career at the Pentagon when he is tasked with the case of Vietnam War hero William H. Pitsenbarger (Jeremy Irvine). Post-humously given the Air Force Cross, the men Pitsenbarger saved on his last mission have been begging for years for his award to be upgraded to the Medal of Honour.

There are flashbacks to the Vietnam War throughout but for the most part, this film is quiet and contemplative, not tense. Huffman reluctantly leaves the comfort of his office to interview those who witnessed Pitsenbarger’s extraordinary valour. The veterans include Takoda (Samuel L. Jackson), Burr (Peter Fonda) and Mott (Ed Harris) - all men left scarred by the war and changed by their brief time with the fallen airman. The veteran actors are not given big parts but they’re all good in their roles. Also moving are Christopher Plummer and Diane Ladd, who play Pitsenbarger’s elderly parents. A big theme in 1917 was the futility of medals and recognition when your life is the tradeoff. In The Last Full Measure, we see that medals are not for the benefit of those who receive them, but for those they leave behind. Witnessing the soldier's stories through Huffman's eyes gives you something to think about and for those who have ties to the military, it’ll certainly have an impact.

The war flashbacks are well directed and the scenes with the veterans contain genuine emotions. At 110 minutes, however, the film is too long. If I could give some advice to writer/director Todd Robison, I’d tell him to ditch the scenes that don’t focus on Huffman and the testimonies. When we drift away from Pitsenbarger’s story, we hanging out with Carlton Stanton (Bradley Whitford) and the character is completely unnecessary. Did we really NEED a villain, one that’s this slimy, and underhanded? The film depicts nearly everyone who works at a desk as an ungrateful weasel but he’s the worst and it becomes awkward, particularly during the last act. Whereas the rest of the picture feels honest and passionate, this other stuff feels like writer/director Todd Robinson had a bone to pick with someone.

While The Last Full Measure is good, there’s not much about it that demands to be seen on the big screen. The performances and unmistakable passion will make you happy to have seen it but the running time and certain cartoonish characters will prevent you from loving it.
