Tonight's listening, all I can say is wow! I love the Lillingtons so when I heard they had an EP coming out covering songs by Enemy You, of course I had to order it! I didn't know anything about the band Enemy You but this release was a tribute to David Jones from the band who committed suicide in 2015. It arrived today and I've been playing it all night, it's on gorgeous red vinyl and the liner notes by Kody (from the Lillingtons and Teenage Bottlerocket) talks about his friendship with David and how he has also battled depression. Having been in some dark places over the last year or so, it struck a chord. A proportion of the sales go to The Lifeline which is a suicide prevention charity. I have an affliction (some would say several!) but having a somewhat obsessive nature and being a bit of a completist isn’t a good combination when you have a love of music! When I first started buying records if I found a band/artist that I liked I would set about trying to own everything they did, regardless of whether it was any good! Obviously that just wasn’t a viable strategy as I didn’t have the time or resources to do it, then other things came along to distract a teenager but when the cd revolution arrived and my record deck was replaced by a CD player, I drifted away from vinyl. Around ten years ago I started collecting vinyl again but still didn’t have a record deck but I just liked buying the limited colour pressings that Fat Wreck Chords among others were putting out. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I really love Teenage Bottlerocket and as a completist I’ve bought all their albums but also started looking at other bands that members of TB were in. Kody was in The Lillingtons and people were raving about them so I bought three of their albums and they are full of catchy, fast tunes about alien invasions, The Red Menace and spies, I really liked them but also couldn’t quite see what all the fuss was about! A couple of years later The Lillingtons signed for Fat and they released Stella Sapiente and of course I ordered it on colour vinyl and cd but on the first listen I was disappointed, a lot slower in places with a much darker feel and songs about the Crusades, Illuminati and the occult but the more I listened, the more I loved it and it’s now probably the most played album in my collection!
