Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band "Grow Fins Vol. II: The Trout Mask House Sessions" 2xLP. This isn't the first time that I have said it: I prefer this era of The Magic Band without The Captain. The music is so dense and obtuse that I find it far more hypnotic and amazing without Don warbling over top of it. While later versions of the band make difficult and jarring music and it's awesome (late era Captain is my favorite actually), but to me, Trout Mask is far more impressive as an instrumental work. Now, I'm not saying if you played people an instrumental version of the album first that it would be more easily accepted into people's hearts... but I bet more people would get it. The dual assault of this wild music and Beefheart's feral vocals is understandably a lot for most people to digest. The star track of this set is the instrumental take of "Ella Guru", long my favorite Beefheart song.
