Neo-Expressionism is an art movement that emerged in the late 1970′s.

Ways of seeing

Looking into more theoretical research into my concept of subtraction I found a book and TV documentary called 'Ways of Seeing' by John Berger. Although most of the content is 'a very influential text on art criticism', there are links with my work. I have been looking at removing elements from their context and creating new art with a different or new purpose. Ideally, I am subtracting parts allowing the viewer to savour the work with a clarity that would be lost if there were any 'distractions' present.

Berger states that 'the meaning of an image will change depending on its context. The image could be used in advertising, often reconfirming the mystification of art, or someone could pin a reproduction on his or her pin-board, seeing something very personal in the image.

He also suggest an activity to demonstrate this, which helps explain part of the process that I have been using with my experimentation. "Find a photograph you feel has a clear meaning, study it with a view to selecting parts of it which, when seen in isolation, or in conjunction with other parts would result in a different meaning. Make a good photocopy or scan of the original, cut it up and present the parts to illustrate the new meaning".
