You know that feeling when the fog begins to lift and everything seems particularly vibrant and colorful, and the air is delicious enough drink up in great big gulps? I just... Ugh

Guys, I don’t even know where to begin with my most recent book, The Paper Wasp

First I’ll start by saying thank you to Net Galley and Grove Press for an ARC of this book, but dear lord was it a trip.

It’s primarily about these two women that reconnect at a high school reunion; Elise, a Hollywood starlet and Abby, still stuck in her hometown. Abby makes the decision to fly to LA to see Elise and the rest is a roller coaster of madness, but not in a good way,

First off, I absolutely hate when authors use 50 cent words frequently in their writing and there’s a lot of it in this book. I don’t care if it’s a character choice to make them look “interesting” or “unique,” if I have to use the dictionary more than twice on one page, then you’ve failed as a story teller. It takes me out of the story and feel like an idiot for not being able to keep up. But my biggest problem with the book is that I didn’t understand the motivations behind Abby’s decisions. It’s hard to sympathize with a character that you can’t back up.

I won’t go into hella details but, to me, she comes off as a awful person who abandons her friends and thinks she’s so much more intelligent and better than every one she meets. The book is written from her point of view, as if she’s writing a letter to Elise, which made it hard to follow half the time. I also didn’t see a purpose to this book, like nothing was wrapped up for me.

It just wasn’t the book for me, guys. It’s an art house type of book that I can see being made into a film by A24. I’ll let y’all decide when it comes out in late June of this year
