Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Nick Jonas
Hollywood has a tendency to make sequels to films that nobody asked for or wait too long in making a sequel long after interest in a sequel has waned. The late great Robin Williams starred in the original Jumanji (1995) 22 years ago.
Jumanji 2 is not a reboot it is a sequel that makes references to the first film. The board game that tormented Alan Parrish in the first film has evolved itself into a video game to in order to entice a new generation of kids into playing this most deadly game. The first few minutes of the film introduces the kids who are the most common stereotypes in most teen movies; the nerd, the jock, the babe and the mousy girl who seemingly hates everyone.
One day while in detention they stumble upon the game and get sucked into the world of Jumanji. The teens at the beginning of the films inhabit avatars in order to play the upgraded Jumani game. The nerd becomes (The Rock), The jock inhabits Kevin Hart, the pretty girl is Jack Black and the antisocial teen becomes (Karen Gillan).
Jumanji is a fun, silly and goofy adventure film. Jack Black is hysterical in this film and steals the whole movie in my opinion. The Rock and Kevin Hart have great chemistry together and Karen Gillan and simply amazing and I have been a fan of hers since her days on Doctor Who. The whole cast has really great Chemistry and that really helps make this film work.
Through their shared journey through the world of Jumanji a bond begins to form among the four and a once close friendship between the nerd and the jock begins to coalesce once again. Each of the characters in the film are given enhanced abilities (some more than others) and three lives just like in video game. Jumanji is actually a better video game movie than films that are adaptations of actual video game properties.
A lot has been made about the lack of development involving the film’s villain which is a fair point but considering that the villain really isn’t “real” I gave it a pass. The focus of the film is on the friendship between the four individuals and on their respective emotional and spiritual journeys. The film’s message is about not judging a book by it’s cover.
Many of us wish that we could be more. Better looking, thinner, richer more popular. This film through the characters’ arcs in this film shows how much these individuals actually share in common. Their fears, their hopes and their desire to fit in, to belong, to be happy and fruitful.
Jumanji 2 is a fun, funny and quick paced action comedy. There is not much to the plot of the film it’s just a fun vehicle for four talented actors to show off their comedic chops in this surprisingly worthy sequel to its successor. If you want a fun film to check out this is for you.
