I devoured There Will Come a Darkness in a day. I heard some good stuff about it on booktube and the synopsis seemed interesting enough so I decided to try and request it. I’ve never expected the ride I was getting.
There Will Come a Darkness takes place in a world where until a hundred years ago Seven Prophets protected the land and the countries. Their visions would allow people to prepare when a disaster was about to strike. They also gifted humanity with supernatural powers - four bodily Graces, a Grace of Heart, a Grace of Blood, a Grace of Mind and a grace of Sight. They allowed people born with them to protect, heal and help others.
However, a hundred years ago the Prophets disappeared, leaving one last unfinished prophecy. It said that the last Prophet will come after them and either save the world or destroy it.
Holy cow, this book. It grabs you at the beginning and holds tight until the very end, not caring if you signed up for it or not. There was so much action but somehow the book never lost the sight of the characters, their development and relationship to make a place for it. If I didn’t know it was a debut I would never have guessed because the writing, the pacing, and the characters were all so good. The magic system was clearly explained but at the same time there were no info-dumps, the world felt alive and made the reader care about its issues. I also loved how instead of forcing all the characters together to work as a team the author chose to tell their own stories that would from time to time end up interlacing with the stories of the other characters and yet somehow by the end of the book most of the main five had met and interacted with the other four in one way or another. There were also many amazing twists that always kept you on your toes, which I actually really appreciated because the reader learns or at least starts suspecting something the characters don’t realize very early in the book. It could have easily be made into “the twist” of the book but instead, we got to watch how they make the mistakes based on their assumption while we knew it was wrong.
Now to the characters. I absolutely adored how they were each an individual person with a set of goals. They were allowed to make mistakes. They were allowed to have doubts and be afraid. Each had their own voice that was clearly distinct from the others. My favorites were Jude and Anton. I can absolutely relate to Jude’s willingness to drop his whole holy mission for the person he likes. The relationship between them was also very sweet even though they had quite a rocky start.
I did not expect so much diversity while getting into the book but I got a cast of characters that were mostly PoC (Not sure about Jude but I’m pretty sure it was mentioned he wasn’t white). There were also gay characters which I appreciate.
I wasn’t too happy about Beru’s ending but I am really curious to see what will it mean for her, Jude and Ephyra. It’s mostly a personal preference though, as I don’t like it when characters die. I don’t think it’s a good reason to lower the rating.
There Will Come a Darkness is a breathtaking and captivating debut with memorable characters and an action-packed plot. I would recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy novels with a bit of a darker setting.

I cannot imagine doing multiple points of view is easy but Katy sure makes it seem that way with her FIVE different POVs!! I absolutely love the story and how seamlessly she switches from one character to another. And despite only having a few chapters from each character I really felt like I got to know each character and their struggles. Plus there is a GORGEOUS map to go with some detailed and beautifully crafted world building!!!
