Pekoe Mellow Tea House presents its next free talk “Directing Hamlet” Anna is currently directing Our Country’s Good at the Tobacco Factory and has recently finished an acclaimed production of Twelfth Night at the Southwark Playhouse. Anna was recently assistant artistic director to Gregory Doran on his seminal production of King Lear starring Antory Sher. She specialises in theatre and has experience in radio, TV and film. She is also co-founder of Juncture Theatre, an Assistant Director and RSC Creative Fellow.
In this talk Anna gives a unique insight into assisting Simon Godwin’s groundbreaking production of Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Anna will share her insights and experiences of bringing Shakespeare’s most renowned masterpiece Hamlet from page to stage. I went to Stratford-upon-Avon last week, for the opening of an exhibition, at the RSC, of cartoons based on the work of William Shakespeare. It runs until 15 September and is well worth checking out. Cartoons by Steve Bell, Dave Brown, Martin Rowson and several others. I have five pieces in the exhibition, including the one on the poster, which dates back to 2001. My favourite is the one above, of Ed Miliband and Nicola Sturgeon.

I feel like lately when I see ‘color blind casting,’ it feels like your white friend who’s like ‘I don’t see race.’ You can pat yourself on the back for that all you want, but it doesn’t really make it make sense.
I’ve seen two productions this year where someone is leaning over a dead body that looks nothing like the actor who played her husband saying, ‘Oh, it’s my husband. It’s definitely him. It could be no one else but him.’ And I’m in the audience thinking, ‘one of these guys is tall and built, and the other isn’t. How are you confused? One of these guys is black, and the other isn’t. Have you even met your husband?’ Because, at this point, their ‘color blind’ choice just makes her seem like she’s not paying attention. It’s requiring every character and audience member to disregard the physical attributes of the people actually cast.
You want to cast POC in your play, go ahead, power to you. But do it by being aware of who you cast and actually paying attention to them. Don’t do it in some bizarre fashion that requires everyone to not notice they’re there or to pretend they’re white. That’s just messed up.
