Of all the times for one of the twins to seem serious and deep, why now, and why this question? He let out a sigh, and gave a gentle shrug of his shoulders, gazing at the young woman for only a second before his eyes met the ground again.
"I used to believe that the gods were these almighty beings who guarded us with shields, hammers and magic; strong and powerful kings of times long past who were waiting to welcome the strongest of soldiers to Valhalla with open arms! But now…"
Hiccup paused, his brows furrowing in distress as he fought back the emotion he’d been fighting so much recently.
"Now…I-I don’t know what to think. If there are any beings up there, I think they only want the world to suffer. I mean, for all we know, every fallen soldier is stuck burning in the deepest layer of hell, instead of sitting at a table feasting and being treated like kings in some beautiful palace. Or rotting in the river! Who knows?!” he trailed off, his voice cracking slightly on the last couple of words, before another deep sigh rushed from his lungs, his head hanging low.
He’d given a lot of thought to this subject lately, in fact, it was bothering him far more than he’d let on, but he hadn’t really considering talking about it and no one had even asked until this point.
