WELCOME TO THE SEWING CIRCLE.  

In Underground Season 2 Episode “Contraband" Lady Hawkes arrives at a boardinghouse where she meets the proprietor; a woman named Georgia. It appears at first that Elizabeth has signed up for a Sewing Circle, but it turns out, these ladies are here for the movement. They are all about being armed and learning how to shoot. The women also discuss rallies, bake sales and writing pamphlets to help champion the abolitionist cause.

Join us Saturday, September 22nd for the opening reception of The Sewing Circle at Seaver Gallery, from 5 – 8 pm. The exhibition features new work by ten artists in Los Angeles. The artists included in the show are Lavialle Campbell, Rebecca Campbell, Phung Huynh, Laura Krifka, Tidawhitney Lek, Siobhan McClure, Kelly McLane, Stephanie Mercado, Andrea Patrie and Kate Savage. The exhibition explores feminine narratives, once trivialized and only told openly in domestic spaces. The artists in the Sewing Circle merge the personal and the political in female-centric narratives. Overlapping threads in their art are: the body as a vehicle of desire, subjugation, power, identity and more.
