#thevintagesewingchallenge Day 6: Pride & Accomplishments. _ I went to school for Fashion Design and my sewing skills were definitely at their prime then. I’ve always been proud of my Senior collection and all of the pieces that I did throughout school and shortly after graduating. My senior collection was dancewear and I wanted it to be able to go from performance to streetwear. It was inspired by old military uniforms. Especially WWII. One of the coats was designed around my grandfathers army belt and all of the pieces incorporated antique military patches, buttons, or pins. I really hope to get back to this caliber of sewing again. Day 3 of #thevintagesewingchallenge is “On the Cutting Table”. This cute little vintage bathing suit and wrap skirt was what I had been planning on sewing a couple of weeks ago. I even got a mock up made. Just need to alter the pattern up top. (Gosh darn my small chest and big butt 🙄) I even bought this cute coral fabric for it last summer and never got around to it. Along with another sun dress I never got around to making. However, I ended up switching gears last week to make a couple pairs of summer shorts for my boyfriend to have for vacation next month. He’s tall and skinny, so he has a hard time finding clothes that actually fit him well. We are also going to be in Arizona, so he wanted some lightweight material to combat the desert summer heat. It may be a modern pattern and silhouette, but he did pick out seer sucker (after eyeing a seer sucker suit on a recent shopping trip), which is a nod to vintage menswear’s. Day 2: The Zone #thevintagesewingchallenge @shopmakethislook @wearinghistory @iliveinmylab If my mother knew I was sharing this hot mess of a workspace she would die. 😳 I took a snapshot of the cleanest area to conceal the video in my feed... My mom and I share a sewing room. It’s filled to the brim with years of collecting items. The sad part is this isn’t even our entire stash of sewing related items 🙈 That’s what happens when you have a mom that has been sewing since 1980 and a daughter that studied fashion design. 😬 There’s always a million projects and scraps thrown everywhere. That’s how us creative folks work. 🤓 I usually don’t take my time planning for too long. I see inspiration, I dig through my stash of patterns and fabrics, and try to recreate it to fit my wants and needs. If I let it sit too long I will lose interest and motivation. My planning mostly comes in the form of planning time in my busy schedule to sew. What I need- I’m going to interpret as what I need to add to my sewing supplies 🤪 (like I really need anything else haha) I foresee pattern weights in my near future. Now that I’m doing more with my real vintage patterns, I find that I am always going the pattern weight route. 👋🏻🤓 Hi vintage lovers! This my first photo challenge I’ve ever decided to participate in. I’m so new to this, but I saw my cousin @mmeburdette post about #thevintagesewingchallenge and it looked like a nice small one to ease into. Keri, I hope you’re excited because I’m going to use these challenges to start holding myself accountable and get back into sewing 🙃. • • Day 1: I feel weird introducing and talking about myself, but here it goes...My name is Lauren, I’m 28 years old, and I’ve got a passion for everything vintage. I always have. I grew up in a household where I was only aloud to listen to the oldies music. My parents used to drag my sister and I all over to antique stores and auction. I grew up listening to 45s in a jukebox, watching classic movies, you name it. So I guess I was just destined to always see the beauty in old things. I also grew up with a mother that has a passion for sewing. I started at a young age making outfits for my dolls and then gradually working my way up into my own clothes and designing them and altering patterns with my mom. I ended up getting a Bachelor’s in Fashion Design. Most of my work (even as a graphic designer now) is inspired by vintage designs. The dress in my picture is from vintage pattern reprint (I believe butterick?) and I designed the fabric. I made it while I was in school to wear to my senior portfolio. A lot of my work, at the time I was in school, was inspired by WWII military uniforms. You can see some of my work if you scroll way into the depths of my instagram haha! 🙈 These days, however, I now work in graphic design and teach dance. Most of my free time is taken up by work or projects for work. This summer I finally feel like I have some “me” time to do projects for fun! Fun? Free time? What is that?... I’ve been trying to get myself back into old hobbies: sewing! Most of my projects I never finish, end up not happy with end result, or just simply don’t have the time and forget it. I’m hoping this sewing challenge will help motivate me to get back into sewing I want to keep my sewing knowledge fresh! Although it usually just feels like riding a bicycle every time I come back to it. 💞
