⟡ Sam Winchester hates you. Like, really hates you, ever since you were kids. He hates your pretty face, your teasing eyes, and your sweet lips that Dean got to taste a long time ago. he hates you so much that he can't stop thinking about you.
warnings: reader gets patched up, Sam only knows how to open up with her, a little oc
The room was eerily quiet, save for the gentle clinking of metal against metal. Dean had gone out earlier that evening for a slice of pie and a strong drink, leaving you and Sam to clean up what the hunt had left behind.
"You couldn't be more gentle?" You hissed, gripping the counter behind you in pain.
Sam frowned, dropping the last piece of glass into the sink. "This isn't really my forte, y'know? You were the one patching us up."
"Yeah well-" You breathed, gulping as Sam threaded a needle. "You better learn fast before I bleed out."
The Winchester winced at the joke, a little too soon, in his opinion. It was just right, in yours. Eyes tracking his large hands, the world seemed to pause for a moment as Sam tapped your leg.
"This is gonna hurt."
"Yeah, no shit."
The first few stitches were hell, every pierce of the needle sending a painful jolt through your body. Sam kept you still, looming over you as he tried to steady his fingers.
"Y'know...Dean was never mad at you."
"What...?" Sam paused, sparing you a quick glance. The same feeling was coming back to him, that curdling in his chest, the type he couldn't ignore. How could he when it came to you?
"Dean. He was just upset, he needed you." You spoke, biting back a whimper as he finished another stitch. "But I know you needed that freedom more...god forbid you end up like us."
You tried to give him a smile, taking in the man in front of you. He wasn't the kid that followed you around anymore, not the boy you tried so hard to keep away from John's wiles. It was good that he got away, even if it meant leaving Dean...and well, leaving you.
"You don't have to do this, y'know?" Sam whispered, observing the twitch on your brows, the doubt swimming in your eyes. "Being like a mother. Dude, you're barely three years older than me. don't you want a life or something?."
He shrugged, pressing a cloth damp with antiseptic onto your wound a little too rough.
"Ow! Do you still hate me or something?" You grunted, hitting his arm.
"Sorry for helping you then." He rolled his eyes, bandaging your torso, double checking if it fit right once, thrice, four times before you hit his arm and pushed off the counter.
"You never told me by the way." You muttered, shrugging on a jacket. "Y'know? Why you suddenly acted like...like I was public enemy number 1."
"I saw you and Dean."
Your brows furrowed, turning to look at him.
"Kissing, in the backseat."
"Oh...oh-" Heat travelled to your cheeks, trying to hide the embarrassment with a hand on your face. "Listen I- Sammy, that was a long time ago, we were stupid teens and Dean..."
You shrugged.
"He was the only one around, I guess. But shit, Sam, it didn't mean anything."
"Really now?" He raised a brow.
"You think I can bear to actually be with him? You know I would've killed the guy."
Sam lingered by the doorway, watching as you moved around the motel room. To be fair, hunting had driven you off from a normal childhood. School, friends, partners, were all useless in John's perspective. Hunters didn't deserve normal, didn't need anyone aside from themselves. Sam understood all too well.
So why didn't he feel any better?
"Right..."
⟡
"So why that specifically?"
"Wha- I'm not telling you that!" Sam grunted, slipping on a jacket. You'd been pestering him about his confession for days now, pushing his buttons until he finally answered. He kept avoiding giving you another answer, opting to throw a stray pillow in your direction.
"Oh come on!" You rolled your eyes, joining him on the creaky motel bed. "You were like my shadow! One kiss with the sloppiest man alive wouldn't have changed that too much."
You poked his arm.
"Hey."
Sam glared at you, turning away. You followed, entering his line of vision once more.
"Sammy, don't be so mean to me. Tell me." You grinned with a tilt of your head, taking full advantage of his building frustration.
"No chick-flick moments." He grunted, trying to move back.
"Seriously? Bringing in Dean's philosophy?"
Sam sighed, begrudgingly meeting your eyes. Not once did he expect that opening up to you would lead to...this. Like you were trying to make up for something you didn't understand.
"I don't know man, you always liked Dean more than me. It was the straw that broke the camel's back, go figure."
He watched as your expression changed in real time, taking in the downward curve of your lips, the dimming in your eyes, the guilt eating you up.
He hated that.
"It's whatever-"
"No- Sammy." You took his arm, taking a breath as you shuffled closer. "Listen...I'm sorry. You were just a kid, I should've known better. But I don't like Dean more than you. I...I care about you, I care about Dean. You boys are all I have, no way in hell am I choosing one over the other."
You looked up at him, squeezing his arm, bottling up the regret you knew would begin eating you alive. A grin forced itself onto your lips.
"Got a little too chick-flick there, didn't I?"
Sam shook his head, a smile tugging at his lips.
"Just right, I think." He took your hand in his, guiding it off his arm. "I know you care about us, you were just a kid too."
Your grin grew smaller, a little less forced and a little more genuine.
"Thanks, Sammy."
"Of course."
Sam watched you clear your throat, his heart racing as you ruffled his hair. You paused, leaning over for a moment for your lips to brush his temple like you did so long ago. Except he was just a kid then.
The ping of a notification rang loudly in the small room, breaking Charles’ concentration from the latest reports for tomorrow’s mission. He patted around his desk absentmindedly, his eyes never leaving the page as he jotted down another note. In his search, he accidentally jostled a precariously stacked pile of papers and yelped, lunging at it when the pages started to slide off his desk. His loud sigh of relief broke the silence, his hand slamming on the stack just in time to avoid disaster.
“Putain, why doesn’t anyone in this base ever staple their reports?” he grumbled under his breath.
After making sure the documents were secured, he grabbed his phone and unlocked it, pulling down his notifications tab and frowning when he saw an Instagram chat alert to his private account.

Summary:
Things change for the better.
Things change for the worse.
Things just change when we're not ready.
Notes:
A/N: This chapter's title has changed 3 times since I started work on this fic. The tone changed A LOT from when it was first just outlined-sure it's simple but honestly I think it's fitting for it. Next chapter is gonna be a bit massive (s well as Tony finally entering the picture yay!)-I'm already over 10 pages and I'm not even to the halfway mark. Thanks so much for reading!
