Okay but why are queer people upset if a character portrayed as queer is put in a heterosexual relationship? How does that personally hurt them?? They're not in the fucking relationship, they don't have to support it. Like, do all the queers who read Homestuck honestly start breaking down, crying, and having panic attacks because they see Dirk in a heterosexual relationship? Is that what's happening??
There is a thing called representation in the media that heterosexuals have the privilege of it, while the queer people do not have that. When there are finally some well-developed queer characters, representing them, that queer people can relate to, but then the character's queer attributes are erased, the message that is sent to the queer people is that their queer attributes do not matter and are not significant (and therefore can be readily erase). This message is further enhanced by the fact that heterosexuals have the power to oppress and resonates with the messages the queer people often get in real life that their orientation is "wrong", "immoral", and so on. This is one of many reasons why queer erasure is problematic.
The reaction to this message varies for each individual. Some are angry, some are left with despair, and panic attack is not unknown of, while some have no negative reaction at all. [These are based on queer community I am in.]
