It’s so sad that the hunger games is so often disregarded as just one of those cliché, romance stories for teen girls with an unnecessary love triangle for them to thirst over (the likes of twilight) when in reality, it’s so much deeper than that. I read the first book a couple of days ago, and already I can’t wait to read the second and the third. The way the book shows the corruption of the capital and the dehumanization of the districts is phenomenal. And the love triangle isn’t there for nothing, it’s supposed to be an allegory for the different paths she’s struggling to choose between in the midst of everything. With Peeta representing kindness and humanity and Gale representing anger and vengefulness, both as a trauma response to the cruel reality of their world, but with both choosing different ways to combat the system and to fight. Where Gale lets his hatred fester, Peeta is determined to not let the Capitol take that humanity and compassion away from him.
All this to say, I hate how the hunger games is represented, just because it’s popular among girls, because it’s genuinely such a strong piece of media and not to mention, it’s phenomenally written.
