Old Memories from Dance Classes
I saw a post earlier about Miles Morales doing ballet and having trouble adjusting to his new strength as Spider-Man, and it just reminded me of memories that needed to be shared.
In a past life, I used to dance competitively. I am classically trained so ballet, tap, and jazz. Also did lyrical and open which are fusion styles. Did it for 12-13 years. My specialty was leaping which is a little uncommon. This is where our story begins.
During solo practice, my teacher would sometimes have me warm up with 2lbs weights on the ankles, more for endurance practice then anything else. I hated doing this - not because it was all that difficult, but because I couldn’t land properly afterwards.
So, I’d be jumping after removing these weights and be higher in the air than average from the weight change. I can’t tell you how many times that I’d be preparing to land, and there’s no ground. And you don’t really know what to do.
It’s just like a brief moment of ‘Where’s the floor? Am I floating? How do I get out of this? Seriously, where’s the floor?’ Because per my training, I should have landed already. Normally, it wasn’t a problem, but stumbling would happen.
Just silly things you remember. Just to point out how much jumping I did, my last solo had at least 26 different choreographed leaps and jumps. That is a lot for a less than 3 minute performance for the competition circuit.
