“ Who would look after you if I did that? ” // bucky + steve
the musketeers sentence starters ~ no longer accepting !
he wants to smile, wants to say that he has complete faith in the universe to bring his brother back. why shouldn’t he? it’d brought him back from the ashes that Thanos had turned him into so why not now? yet as he stands here he’s gripped by a furious trepidation that reminds him that the world doesn’t ever work in your favor. you’re stuck in an upside down that spills your hopes and makes you thrive solely on the aches of possibility. Bucky might come back, they might get out of this alive, they might have a life once this is all over. nothing was certain and Steve hated how helpless he felt just then. he’s staring at Bucky like it’s the last time he’s ever going to see him again. he had lost him twice already could he really survive a third? so much has been slipped from between his fingers the entire time he’s been alive. his mother, Bucky two times, Peggy, the Commandos - it was though everything was falling away and he, in spite of the strength he applied everywhere else, could do nothing to save any of it. stepping towards Bucky he touches his hand to his back and clears his throat to rid himself of those thick emotions that’ll only make this harder on Buck. “ thought I told you I could look out for myself? “ he states as though thoroughly offended but it’s true, isn’t it? somewhat? after all this time? “ I’ll be right behind you. you really think I’ll let you have all the fun? “ and then Bucky is walking away and he feels pieces of himself fall away with each step he takes.

Marlene stiffened at first when she felt arms around her body, but she was quick in recognizing who they belonged to. She had, after all, spent one night too many lying in the warmth of the body pressed against her back. No. She can’t do that again. Taking in a deep breath, Marlene’s hands hovered over his before she gently pried his hands off. “Don’t do this, Evan.”
