@graveycrds / james & lily
lily couldn’t hold it in anymore. the engagement had been the happiest she felt in a long time, but after the incredible joy wore off she felt herself struggling with guilt. she and james were preparing their future together but she still hadn’t told them what she knew about it. it was a good reason, she truly believed so. james didn’t deserve to spend all this time he had to be happy and free in washington sitting around worrying about what were probably unavoidable disasters. lily had adjusted to the information, yes, but it had taken months, and they idea of having to watch james go through it well left an angry pit in her gut that she just couldn’t see through no matter how much she hated keeping things from him. but at the end of the day that didn’t excuse keeping silent about it. and besides all that, she really wanted to make sure they could both spend time with harry here together before this all ended. it was the closest they’d probably ever have to getting to know their son, and they couldn’t just pass it up. all three of them deserved whatever they could get out of it, and that could happen while she kept keeping secrets.
she had made up her mind after the engagement. anytime she thought about things like weddings her thoughts eventually strayed to their future and the fact that she had entered into an engagement where james wasn’t aware of everything. maybe if he knew he wouldn’t have proposed. they could have split up, tried to change their future. lily might not have wanted that, too in love with james and harry to give them up, no matter how much it shortened her life, but she couldn’t just take away that option from james. besides, at this point she wouldn’t have been surprised if he called off the engagement just for the fact that she had kept this from him, let alone trying to change what was coming for them. it had been weighing on her, to the point where she felt like she nearly lost it every day. the other day she nearly just handed the ring back to him, as if that was the right way to fix things and apologize. but that would just cause more panic, and definitely wouldn’t give him the calm explanation he certainly deserved this far in. she steadied herself when she heard him come in, pushing past the voice in her brain saying she could wait one more day that would keep going for weeks and weeks if she let it. “james?” she had poured them both cups of tea, hnding one over to him as she approached with a quick kiss on his cheek, trying not to frown. “we need to talk, and, merlin, you might hate me after this but i need you to just sit and listen to me for a bit, okay?”
