Hi, I'm back with a short animatic!!
This post is about The Squid System, the idea that Inho has Dissociative Identity Disorder and therefore Inho shares the body with Frontman, Young-il and Player 132, all having to function with each other within one body. They have their own identity, their own likes and dislikes, memories, roles, all of it.
I wanted to draw this idea, its a bit sad, but somewhat hurt/comfort type of thing. Its Young-il distressed because of the amnesia that comes with DID.
The story behind it is basically a headcanon I have. Set after the games, Gihun survived and he's in a happy relationship with Young-il. Gihun is the only person who knows about the disorder, he knows Young-il isn't always Young-il in the body and he does his best to get along with everyone else, Frontman, Inho and Player 132 when they switch in the body. It's hard but he tries to respect everyone, he gets that everyone has their own role. Sometimes he gets into arguments with Frontman, but Frontman is actually the reason Gihun survived. Within the Squid System, I like to think Frontman did everything he could to save Gihun, because Frontman cares about Young-il a lot, and he knew how much Young-il loves Gihun. So they're messy and complicated, but everyone does their best.
And anyway, I got this ideea that sometimes, Gihun starts talking to Young-il about a fun thing the two of them did together to sort of jog his memory and remind him of something good, to cheer up his lover, especially if he knows Young-il was in the body when it happened, there's no ill-intent behind it...but, depending on the day and the memory, sometimes it does the opposite to Young-il. Because the more Gihun talks, the more Young-il realizes he can't remember, or he has a very faint recollection of it. Memories can get very blurry with DID, because of something called dissociative amnesia. Also, from what I know, for a system a lot of the memories can be traumatic, so those memories might get taken away by other alters, in order to keep the host, Young-il, stable. And this really upsets Young-il. Whenever he realizes one of his memories got taken away, he feels like someone reached into his heart, took something that was his and ripped it to pieces. Especially if it was a good memory. Because of this, he kinda gets tears in his eyes...and struggles to pretend he's okay...and then Gihun notices and immediately stops talking about it and instead comforts him like "Doesn't matter, doesn't matter. That was boring anyway, and we're gonna do it again sometime, its gonna be even better, my love." giving him hugs.
And I could just stop here, this is basically the post, its a very short animatic of Young-il crying because of the dissociative amnesia that comes with DID, but if you wanna read a bit more about it... keep reading.
They switch when they get upset, and here I like to think Inho takes the body. Within the system, Inho is the gatekeeper. Think police-officer Inho, this is about where he's stuck as an alter, but his role as gatekeeper allows him to store a lot of the memories and if Young-il tries to think of a memory, sometimes it can get Inho's attention...so Inho would switch in. And then I think Inho would talk to Gihun about this but also, for funsies, I think it would turn into a slight vent...because Inho is a beginner gatekeeper. He used to be a co-host alongside Young-il, he's still learning how to gatekeep memories.
So Inho ends up talking to Gihun like "Don't try to jog Young-il's memory, PLEASE, I don't know what I'm doing half of the time, I got access to all these memories, did YOU KNOW we harvested people's organs for a while? ...of course you didn't. I didn't either. I'm a police officer, this shit is so illegal. I can't process half of these things, I think I accidently deleted the memory you're talking about and how did I even do that, I can't delete these stuff, someone HAS TO HAVE IT, but I don't know who I gave it to...and Young-il is still crying. I can actually hear him crying...in my head. Oh, shut up... . *listens to Young-il get comforted by Frontman* ...I miss my brother. And I want a snack."
Inho going through it, basically.
This from Gihun's perspective is also wild, because imagine he's comforting his boyfriend which he loves and then a guy switches in his body, and crashes out in a long vent, then talks about his brother...side note, but Frontman can barely even remember they have a brother, Frontman doesn't actually remember Junho, also because of the amnesia that comes with DID, Junho could be walking down the street, Frontman wouldn't know a thing. But Inho does remember Junho.
And after his crashout, Inho would go to take a snack, but because Young-il is still upset at him, Inho unwraps the snack, then Young-il immediately switches in and takes it from him. And Young-il gets to eat it. And also Young-il would complain to Gihun too, munching on the snack and basically saying to him
Young-il: "...I'm fine, don't worry, but like...he's acting as I'm unreasonable for crying about it. I don't mind if its not my memory, you know. If one of them switches in and I lose a few hours, fine. I'll suffer with a gap in my memory, but I'm sure we've been through worse... This was MINE though. And he still took it away, so fuck him, I get to have his snack. Serves him right. He can miss our brother all he wants... I swear all of them are so annoying..."
Frontman: "...you feel better? ...how about we watch a movie later?"
Young-il: "....and Frontman said we should watch a movie later. ...what movie do you want?"
Frontman: "Matri–"
Young-il: "NO, NOT MATRIX! NOT MATRIX AGAIN! Say Matrix one more time, I dare you."
Frontman: "~Matrix."
Young-il: "...I-" *looks at Gihun dead in the eyes* "If he switches in, punch him, please. I won't even get mad."
They are so dumb with each other, but I love writing and thinking about them so much. Of course from Gihun's perspective, all he hears is "...what movie do you want? NO, NOT MATRIX! NOT MATRIX AGAIN! Say Matrix one more time, I dare you. ...I– if he switches in, punch him, please. I won't even get mad."
ngl, sometimes they do sound a bit funny because of this, but Gihun loves them so much. I headcanon Gihun actually gets so used to their chatter. Because of the DID, Young-il often looks like he's talking to himself when he's all alone and being together with Gihun, they would have plenty mornings when Gihun walks in the kitchen and can hear Young-il talk to one of them while making breakfast...he gets so used to them, the house would sound empty without their chatter.
Hope this was enjoyable, I should post specific headcanons about them, there's so much I wanna write to expand the Squid System because I love them so much, but anyway, hopefully, more content to come soon!!
