So Chapter 33 of my fanfic is up and now I have only about 3 or 4 chapters left until the end, which is WILD. But, I did something with the fic that my readers might find interesting, so I'm here to present it. Behold:
The Reproductive Cycle of Euclydeans.
Now, of course, this is not a part of my Speculative Biology of Euclydeans series, because I made it up for the fanfic, because I thought that it would be funny.
In the fic, Euclydeans are protandrous bidirectional sequential hermaphrodites. Let's break this terminology down. Hermaphrodites means that they all have both male and female reproductive organs. Male reproductive system is in the left side of the body, whilst the female is on the right. Protandrous means that they begin their life as males, meaning that their male glands are going to start producing hormones first. All Euclydeans go through puberty as boys. Sequential hermaphroditism means that an organism changes sex at some point. This means that all male Euclydeans after a while, experience hormonal shift and turn into females. But this change is bidirectional, meaning that female Euclydeans also experience hormonal shift and turn into males. This change is cyclic in them, so let's go through the cycle!
Stage 1: Euclydean has sexually matured and has only male glands working. They produce male hormones which stimulate production of sperm. The ovaries are inactive during this stage.
Stage 2: Hormonal shift to female. The production of sperm ceases and the ovary gets active. Euclydeans have a uterus and they carry their young inside their body, but they lack a placenta, which makes them ovo-viviparous. They create hundreds of big, yolk-rich eggs that they will feed their one chosen embryo with. This is called oophagy and it's extremely taxing to the mother, because she will have to store all of the calories needed for the growth of the baby throughout the entire pregnancy before the eggs have been even fertilized. Thus, her hormones will make her hungrier and she will require more fats and proteins in her diet.
Stage 3: After the female has acquired enough calories in her eggs, she can enter ovulation! Or, more precisely, a fertile period that lasts about a month and ends with her finally ovulating. The eggs remain for a while inside the uterus, waiting to know their fate.
Stage 4: If the eggs were fertilized, the female will carry out a pregnancy. Her biggest and most dominant embryo will eat all of its siblings and be born. But if the eggs weren't fertilized, well, she will have something like a menstruation. She however, won't shed the uterine lining, but instead, she will eject the eggs and fluids associated with them.
Stage 5: After the female cycle is over, the ovary becomes inactive and the hormones turn the Euclydean back to male. He will remain male for the next few years so that the organism can recover from all that stuff the female cycle does to it. This is the reason why Euclydeans usually don't have a lot of children.
So how does this translate to my fic? Mild spoilers for chapters 23-30 below:
So Bill Cipher goes through all of these stages. In chapter 23 he shifts to female, which ends up with him killing the crickershells, then you know that he's been through ovulation in Mabel's apartment in chapters 25-27, then in chapter 28 he experiences mood swings and a form of Euclydean PMS and finally, chapter 30 is the period chapter where he and Ford got so freaky that I had to change the rating of the fic to mature. LMAO.
