Joining the Alliance military was Thisbe’s ticket away from what she saw as her overbearing parents, and a chance to begin to make her own name and mark on the world.
Her relationship with her mother, Ellen, was affable but distant. While she admired her mother’s work and dedication to her research, she resented the time both of her parents spent away from home. She struggled to find ways to communicate with her mother, but rebuffed most of her mother’s attempts to connect as they felt invasive. Thisbe nursed a small sense of jealousy over the easy connection her twin brother seemed to share with their mother.
Her relationship with her father was enormously strained. Their egos clashed frequently. On a private level, she resented his detached manner and the disregard he showed her twin brother’s fruitless attempts and winning his father’s affection. Professionally, Thisbe resented Alec’s AI research as it began to affect her life. What she saw was his selfish, illegal research effectively ending her burgeoning engineering career.
Despite the paternal strain, Thisbe was persuaded to join the Andromeda Initiative by her brother, who appealed to her sense of adventure (and who might have cried a little at the thought of leaving his sister behind). With little to tie her to the Milky Way, and uncomfortable with the thought of not being able to buffer her brother from her father, she acquiesced and made the journey to the Andromeda galaxy with what was left of her small family.

Despite being much better suited for civilian life as a teacher or nurse - Teddy joined the Alliance military in an effort to earn the admiration and affection he’d desperately been seeking from his father for most of his life.
While Alec might have been proud of his children, he rarely verbalized it. It left Teddy with the nagging assumption that his father was disappointed in him. Teddy endeavored to put himself in situations that would “toughen him up” and force his father to take notice of him.
Thankfully, Alec’s illegal AI research ended Teddy’s career, and as his mother, Ellen, became too ill to continue her work, Teddy became her full-time caretaker. He found it bittersweet to discover his aptitude for nursing as a palliative caretaker for his terminally ill mother.
The pair became close during Ellen’s final months, and Teddy’s dedication to her care helped ease a good deal of Ellen’s fear as she watched the end of her life approach. He dutifully transcribed her life stories and final wishes, put her affairs in order as his father lost himself in his workshop, found her favorite music for the services, made her favorite food, and listened to all of the cathartic questions and thoughts from his dying mother.
With his mother gone, though, and his father’s sights set on a distant galaxy, Teddy persuaded his stubborn sister to join them on their adventure. The tears were always a part of his plan; he knew his sister had too big of a soft spot to ignore them, and Teddy wouldn’t dream of breaking his promise to his mother to keep their family together.
Teddy’s love for his family and is what keeps his sister from severing ties with them completely. Thisbe’s support and belief in her brother is what gives him the strength to be himself. Teddy’s emphatic nature reminds Thisbe to be patient with people. Thisbe’s drive reminds Teddy to not give up when things are rough.
