Edward balked – howwas he supposed to help out when he couldn’t even properly form sentences inFrench when he spoke? He knew he should have stuck to the language and paidcloser attention, but there had always been some excuse or other and now herehe was, living in the very not English province, apparently about to help outwith tutoring – in French – also, why was he about to tutor and why had he evenagreed? He supposed that being new to the city and a little overwhelmed andlonely may have played into it and that it had nothing to do with the shy charismaof this Étienne fellow; and so Edward found himself sipping at his drink,(which was excellent) and ate his brownie (which he would have to get more of,if ever he came back here and didn’t die of shame and mortification), while hewaited for the kids to arrive.

The first two arrived shortly after he was done and Étiennetook care of them, sitting them at the small, child sized tables he had andÉtienne helped them get settled; Edward watched, fascinated at how at easeÉtienne seemed – he sat between both children, who seemed to be brother andsister and somewhere between the ages of seven and nine; he told them to takeout their agendas and homework they wanted help with and the children did asthey were told – Étienne was ever so patient with them as first one asked forhelp with a math problem and then the other asked for help with their readingcomprehension assignment; Edward was slightly envious of the ease Étienne hadwith them, but then reminded himself that he knew nothing of this man – maybe Étiennehad children of his own, maybe Étienne had always worked with children – he shouldn’tjudge, it was rude, but he knew that he had never even looked this comfortablearound kids. Ever.

Edward was rather enjoying observing from the sidelines andhad quite forgotten that he was supposed to help, when a third child arrived;this one seemed a little older than the other two and she plopped herself atthe other table and took out her books from her schoolbag after Étienne greetedher with a warm smile and promised that he would be with her in a moment;however, when she asked for him, Étienne had his hands full with the other twoand so Étienne asked him to give him a hand – Edward froze, suddenly awkward,and forgot everything he ever knew about the French language or how to interactwith other human beings who were less than twenty.
