Hearts and flowers is a fairly well known idiom that means excessive sentamentality or romance or an idealised or unrealistic love. Tim loves to play on idioms, so my feeling is that it will be an episode playing on that concept of unrealistic love as a way of contrasting the love of the 118 - both as a family unit as well as their individual romantic relationships - showing that true love of Amy kind is messy and not how it’s made out to be in media or social media - something we’ve seen playing out across this season - a play on “love me anyway” and shouldn’t love be when your at your worst and they’re at their worst you still want to keep trying!” (I’m paraphrasing)
So coming off the back of I’ve got you babe” - a title which can be viewed as having a similar meaning, in relation to Buck and Eddie my working theory is that these two episodes will build into them recognising that in each other - a feelings realisation if you will, as a launch pad to them putting in the work in 10a to get to a place where they can be in a romantic relationship! - it’s about them learning that they’ve been looking for that idealised romantic relationship - looking in the wrong places - figuring out idealised doesn’t exist and what they have with each other is way stronger and better.
Plus it’s that hearts metaphor around Buck and Eddie coming back into play once again - it’s been biding its time to rise again!!
I don’t quite know how my brain got here right now - but I’m thinking thoughts about the way the show has been paralleling Buck and Eddie with each other - as well as with the canon couples on the show - but in a very specific and interesting way - because when you take Abby and Tommy as a collective - they are a parallel of Shannon.
All three are firsts and not lasts for Eddie and Buck.
Abby and Tommy have been intentionally connected on the show (yes making use of a fluke name commonality but that’s what makes it especially clever and interesting) on several levels as being basically two sides of the same coin - Abby was his first serious relationship and Tommy his first queer relationship - they are both Bucks firsts and not his lasts. In the same way that Shannon was Eddie’s first and not his last - the show chose to have buck point out that Shannon was the first girl Eddie slept with - implying she wasn’t his first girlfriend (something that was confirmed in the cut Eddie/Chris conversation about the lake.
If you think of Shannon as two entities instead of one person - Texas Shannon and LA Shannon - it becomes easier to spot the parallels.
Texas Shannon is paralleled with Abby - both leave their respective homes and don’t come back - both Buck and Eddie expected them to return when they had done taking some time for themselves - finding themselves.
While LA Shannon is paralleled with Tommy - LA Shannon asks for a divorce after Eddie wants to have the second child he thinks is coming and to get remarried etc - to go all in with her and their relationship. He is making a decision based on flawed thinking and external expectations after a conversation with a ‘elder’ (supposedly wiser figure - Bobby).
Which is very much a parallel to Tommy dumping Buck after Buck decides to go all in and ask Tommy to move in and starts talking about marriage - after the hurdle of discovering Tommys past with Abby and having talked to an elder (in this case Josh who is a queer elder).
Both narratives are connected to commiting to something due to societal expectations - for Shannon it was becoming pregnant outside of marriage in a Catholic dominant society and therefore ending up married to Eddie.
While for Tommy it was having to mask himself as a straight man because he was in the army and firefighting - both environments that were toxicly masculine and heteronormative at the time Tommy was in them and so he ended up in a relationship with Abby - which then sets up the circumstances for Abby to feel the need to run to find herself.
Both Texas Shannon and Abby then feel the need to run - to find themselves because of the environment they find themselves in and this sets up LA Shannon and Tommy as second firsts for Eddie and Buck. And both LA Shannon and Tommy have grown and evolved since Texas Shannon and Abby and both can see that their respective relationships are not meant to last - that they’re not the right fit - that they are forced and they have the personal development to choose end them before they cause more hurt and damage.
It’s a great play on being firsts and second chances but not lasts and it ultimately shows the suitability of buddie - they make the same mistakes in a different way - both having their first independent of each other but having their second chance/ second first whilst within each others orbits - and because they are ultimately looking for the same thing it is all serving to spin them closer to each other to a point where they can understand what their lasts look like - and that it’s each other
oooooo, I feel myself getting all riled up. Which I shouldn't be, since its 3am and I need to sleep.
But feel free to ignore this, I just need to write.
a friend of mine just posted a response to a post she made months ago, on fb. I don't want her or anyone else in my life to know about my account on here so I won't reblog it.
I grew up in M.J (messianic judaism. We believe Yeshua/Jesus is the promised Messiah... and live out our faith in a very Judaic way...)
Oh sweet Lord in Heaven, there are so many issues with it. I mean many many many many many. How many? So many.
But, I won't get into to those, at least, not today.
One of the issues that people had/have with my friends post/M.J in general is the whole,"we're now jews even tho we aren't deal." I totally get that. It's crazy.
But, what irks me is when practicing Jews, claim that other ethnic Jews aren't Jews anymore, because I love Jesus.
I am ethnically Jewish. You can't erase that. As much as most of them want to, you just can't. Not without being super hypocritical. It's okay for other Jews to be, buddhists, atheists, agnostics, any other belief system-ists.
But the moment I proclaim, Christ Jesus or Yeshua, you guys have a great beef.
I really don't care anymore. I used to, when I was a teen/fresh adult. But, then I grew up. I matured in my faith.
But, some of the charges that were put in response of her post, here are my responses:
"Will you ever understand our people’s struggle with forced conversions or destruction of our history or any of it?"
Yep. Totally understand. I am what you would call a "Murano". Which let me tell you, are very much marginalized in most jewish sects. If it wasn't for the few kind "elders" in my shul, I would've been really bad off. I wasn't "Jewish enough" in the eyes of most people. These full on Ashkenazi Jews that happened to love Jesus (whom lost family in the holocaust, whose families suffered through all the past struggles and forced/false conversion, and share the exact same histories,) tell me! a Sephardic kid,"Kim, you are Jewish. You look like all the girls I grew up with in the neighborhood. Don't let anyone take that from you. If you want to go to Israel its your birthright." and so on and so forth.
"You are not Jewish. Do not call yourselves that. If you want to be one of us - earn it. Convert, PROPERLY. And leave your Jesus obsession at the door."
I respect that, but you haven't met Jesus. So I don't expect you to get it. But I am going to quote Lecrae
"Yeah! They wanna be politically correct, I suppose
But, I'm comfortable in my skin
While they just pretend in they clothes
I'm scared of falling and failing in front of all of my foes
And I feel some friends are unfaithful
So, I keep my small circle closed
I don't want no handouts or favors, no functional saviors
I'ma tell that truth till it kill me and I'm chilling with my Creator
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus to all of my haters
For the ones that think I forgot him
And the ones who won't let me say
I ain't scared no mo"
M.J is very messed up. I will totally talk about it one day. And since I belong to Jesus it doesn't matter. Or it shouldn't. Talk to my bff and she will tell you how much I'm still messed up from growing up in it. But, Jesus is slowly rebuilding me, and making it all better.
I don't care if you don't see me or others as Jewish. You can't change my DNA, as much as you can want to. Thats out of your hands.
Theres so much more to this post, but it's just what always irks me. Like I wrote earlier, Jesus is working on me about it.
