I don’t quite know how my brain got here right now - but I’m thinking thoughts about the way the show has been paralleling Buck and Eddie with each other - as well as with the canon couples on the show - but in a very specific and interesting way - because when you take Abby and Tommy as a collective - they are a parallel of Shannon.
All three are firsts and not lasts for Eddie and Buck.
Abby and Tommy have been intentionally connected on the show (yes making use of a fluke name commonality but that’s what makes it especially clever and interesting) on several levels as being basically two sides of the same coin - Abby was his first serious relationship and Tommy his first queer relationship - they are both Bucks firsts and not his lasts. In the same way that Shannon was Eddie’s first and not his last - the show chose to have buck point out that Shannon was the first girl Eddie slept with - implying she wasn’t his first girlfriend (something that was confirmed in the cut Eddie/Chris conversation about the lake.
If you think of Shannon as two entities instead of one person - Texas Shannon and LA Shannon - it becomes easier to spot the parallels.
Texas Shannon is paralleled with Abby - both leave their respective homes and don’t come back - both Buck and Eddie expected them to return when they had done taking some time for themselves - finding themselves.
While LA Shannon is paralleled with Tommy - LA Shannon asks for a divorce after Eddie wants to have the second child he thinks is coming and to get remarried etc - to go all in with her and their relationship. He is making a decision based on flawed thinking and external expectations after a conversation with a ‘elder’ (supposedly wiser figure - Bobby).
Which is very much a parallel to Tommy dumping Buck after Buck decides to go all in and ask Tommy to move in and starts talking about marriage - after the hurdle of discovering Tommys past with Abby and having talked to an elder (in this case Josh who is a queer elder).
Both narratives are connected to commiting to something due to societal expectations - for Shannon it was becoming pregnant outside of marriage in a Catholic dominant society and therefore ending up married to Eddie.
While for Tommy it was having to mask himself as a straight man because he was in the army and firefighting - both environments that were toxicly masculine and heteronormative at the time Tommy was in them and so he ended up in a relationship with Abby - which then sets up the circumstances for Abby to feel the need to run to find herself.
Both Texas Shannon and Abby then feel the need to run - to find themselves because of the environment they find themselves in and this sets up LA Shannon and Tommy as second firsts for Eddie and Buck. And both LA Shannon and Tommy have grown and evolved since Texas Shannon and Abby and both can see that their respective relationships are not meant to last - that they’re not the right fit - that they are forced and they have the personal development to choose end them before they cause more hurt and damage.
It’s a great play on being firsts and second chances but not lasts and it ultimately shows the suitability of buddie - they make the same mistakes in a different way - both having their first independent of each other but having their second chance/ second first whilst within each others orbits - and because they are ultimately looking for the same thing it is all serving to spin them closer to each other to a point where they can understand what their lasts look like - and that it’s each other
The mess on the couch Margaret bought - that can’t be cleaned - the mess created by bringing a child into the world - while death is looming nearby.
How the whole scene is a metaphor for Bucks life - how his entrance into the world was messy and death was looming - how his birth was an attempt to keep death at bay but it came anyway and has held the hand of the Buckleys ever since. How the Buckleys tried to clean up the mess but their secret created an uncomfortable life for Buck - one that couldn’t be kept hidden and once revealed exposed the mess. How the couch is unsalvageable in much the same way Bucks relationship with his parents is - the mess will always be there in the centre of things.
How the couch is orange and how orange is a colour of superficiality arrogance and pride.
How Kameron batted Natalia away initially but ended up holding her hand - holding the hand of death while bringing life into the world - the same way Margaret was when Buck was born.
How Buck holding that baby and needing a few seconds but ultimately being able to hand it over and let go is a representation of him breaking the cycle even if he is still connecting himself to death he has broken one link in the chain - the link to his birth.
There is something about the first buddie couch interaction being one where they are struggling to get a couch through a door (without taking the pizza off it) and are talking about using tools to alter the door to make it fit - especially interesting if you go with the idea of the pizzas representing girlfriends - that the only way to make the couch for through the door is to alter the door - that as soon as the pizzas are gone they get the couch through the door easily.
Then there is the fact that couch is covered in plastic - it’s new and untainted by the rigours of life - a statement on Buck and Eddie’s relationship at that point (and madneys as well) but also an opportunity for a parallel - because here we are in season 6 and Buck doesn’t have a couch and Buddie are on the precipice of starting something. We know that Buck still doesn’t have a new couch in episode 7 (thanks Oliver) so it’s not too much of a stretch to think that any new couch will be one they choose together - that Buck will just never replace the one in his loft - because he won’t need to!
I’m thinking a lot of thoughts over the choice to not have Chim and Buck talk about comas and dying - because its two things they both share - both have been in a coma and both have actually died. no one else shares those things but them.
I’ve reached the conclusion that its coming - and the reason it hasn’t happened yet is because its part of a bigger conversation - the Madney engagement conversation - Buck can’t talk about his coma and Chim’s place there because if he does then he has to bring up the whole ‘you should be engaged to my sister why aren’t you’ of it all and we’re not at that point in the story yet.
I also think there is something in Bucks arc about them showing his connection with different members of the firefam and its impact on his life etc - Hen very sibling vibe, Bobby as dad, Eddie being manoeuvred into the spousal role. Chim hasn’t fully been placed in the brotherly role yet - he kind of has, but also hasn’t and I think that is very ,much connected into the Chim chasing after Maddie because he knows her differently than Buck does. There is also something in the fact that Chim’s coma is kind of connected into Tatiana getting pregnant, Chim’s feelings around his life having stayed the same (the i’ll wait for the next one of it all) and how that whole thing connects with both the sperm donor storyline as well as the Madney engagement and thats why we’ve not seen them have a conversation yet - it touches on too many important things for down the line in 6b
I don’t even know if I’m making sense at this point!!!
Christopher, space Dinosaurs and his bedroom meta!
Having received several different asks about various things in Christophers bedroom after the Buck and Eddie domestic husbands in their sons room scene from 5x17 I thought the easiest thing to do would be to combine them in to one meta post about all of them! So @lovecolibri @wanderingwomanwondering and @moniquekatie this is for all of you! I’m just sorry it has taken me this long to actually get it finished (at least I made it before S6 started😂) although It has meant I have 30 pictures to play with instead of 12!!!
I’ve been keeping an eye on how Christophers room is decorated since we first saw it because I found the choice of decorations intriguing. I’ve also been keeping a close eye on what Christopher is wearing around other characters as well because a lot can be revealed from the graphics on his t-shirts and his pyjamas. I’ve split it into sections and i’m going to compare the changes the room has gone through since we first saw it in 2x04, the use of camera angles to hide certain aspects of the room in certain scenes and the fact they've moved a few things around to make sure they're in shot in certain scenes!
I think it is also worth noting that the only people Eddie has been in Chris’s room with are Chris, Carla and Buck. He never actually enters the room when Shannon is in there - he stays in the doorway. Carla has only been in there with Eddie when Chris is present (in 4x13 when they’re sorting through his toys for Charlie). Buck however has been in there with just Eddie present and just Chris present - he is the only one to have been so and I think this really highlights the idea that Buck has his own separate relationships with both Diaz boys. The really interesting part of this is when Buck has been in that bedroom alone with Chris. the only one we’ve seen on screen is the post shooting scene, but there is also the moment he puts Chris to bed post Eddies breakdown, when we don’t actually see him in the room, but we see him leaving it and also when Eddie returns home from his date with Ana (the verbal context that he got Christopher into bed and ready for Eddie to say goodnight). I personally find this really fascinating because if we look at the emotional beats of Christophers story, Buck is present for most of the ones connected to turmoil - Eddies breakdown, Eddie going on a date with Ana (this is especially interesting that Buck is the babysitter when we see Eddies first date with Ana post Christopher having run to Buck when he found out about Eddie dating!!) and Eddie being shot (there is also the Christmas connection in 3x10 but we’re taking about Christophers bedroom!) The only ones Buck is not involved in are - the one leading up to Eddie leaving the 118 in the s5 Christmas episode and the conversation around skateboarding back in 3x12.
I’ve put the rest below the cut because this got insanely long!
The yellow closet!
Lets start with the closet - because it hasn’t always been there!! In 2x04 there is a beige closet with glow in the dark stars and moons and a few stickers on the doors.
In 2x07 there is a different wardrobe this time grey and industrial - it looks a bit like a locker, it has stickers on the doors (and something pink hanging, but i can’t figure out what as we don’t see enough of it for long enough for me to figure it out).
This is the one and only time we see this closet, after that we move to the yellow one the next time we see Christophers room in 3x04!
The closets have always remained shut, until 5x17 - that is the first time the yellow closet is opened - Eddie does open and close the built in closet in 4x08.
I have a mini theory about this closet being the one that gets opened and closed.
If you keep in mind the fact that it is built in, I think that closet represents familial/ societal expectations (the ones built into society at this point in time) and Ana and the relationship Eddie has started with her - which Eddie has been keeping secret until this point. Thing is - Eddie cannot find what he is looking for in there because its the wrong closet - ergo Ana is wrong and Eddie maintaining heteronormativity because of the expectations he feels from his family and society (at that moment in time) is wrong as well - so he has no joy there. We only get the tiniest glimpse of the yellow closet, otherwise it is absent from the camera angles - suggesting that Eddie is maintaining course - in the wrong direction because (even though he’s talking to Buck and Buck has Christopher) he cannot see what is in front of him.
Why is all this interesting? well there are several things here - we have the first wardrobe with the glow in the dark stars and moons - this is when Eddie and Chris are newly moved to LA - the glow in the dark stars and moons are actually glowing in the scene we see them in - almost as if the Diaz boys have been guided by the moon and stars and it has lead them to LA (think sailors being guided by the stars for navigation) and now they have arrived and settling in, so they are no longer needed which is why we only see them in 2x04!
The choice of industrial locker style wardrobe for 2x07 is interesting as well - the only person we ever see in the room when this wardrobe is there- Shannon! industry is generally about making and building things and this can be taken two ways in this scenario in my opinion - Shannon is Christophers mother she helped create him. Bu there is also the concept of Eddie bringing Chris to LA to try and build his family and that is what Shannon being in the room also represents - Eddie letting Shannon back into his and Christophers life so they can reconstruct the family - but in a different place.
Then the yellow closet appears in 3x04. It is worth remembering that s2 was an actual house and s3 onwards is the built set house, so there are a few changes to Christopher room, but the only things they changed in furniture terms are the bed and the wardrobe - everything else remains the same as s2. The other thing to note about this yellow closet is when we do and don’t see it in shot. so lets break it down
3x04 - when Eddie is putting Chris to bed and figures out Chris has been having nightmares about Shannon .
4x08 - we get that very brief glimpse in when Chris has run away but other wise - in the earlier scenes in that episode we only see the built in closet.
4x13 - in the video call with Charlie
5x06- when Eddie comes home after being held hostage
5x13 - its in the background while Chris is playing a video game and hears Eddie destroying is room
5x17 - Eddie opens it, takes out clothes and then almost closes it.
The rest of the time it isn’t in shot if the scene is in Christophers bedroom
4x13 - all of the scenes when Ana is in the house
4x14 - when Buck tells Chris his dad has been shot
I’m really fascinated by this because the entire time Eddie is dating Ana the closet is seen a total of 2 times - 4x08 the tiny glimpse when Chris has run away to Buck and then in the video call with Charlie we see it behind Chris and Carla. When Ana is present in the house - we don’t see it at all - the camera is set up so that it is never in shot.
We also never see the closet when Buck is in Christophers room in 4x14 telling him his father has been shot, again because the camera angles don’t allow us to. Remember Eddie is still in a relationship with Ana at this point and his life hangs in the balance because he is in surgery.
The thing I noticed with all of this is that that closet is heavily connected to Eddie - more so than Chris - we only see it when Eddie isn’t present in the room twice - in 4x13 when he is on the other end of a video call (and technically he is in the scene so i almost want to discount it from the equation!) and in 5x13 when he is destroying his room. the longest we see the closet on camera is in 5x17 when it has its starring role and all of this seems to be adding up to one thing - the closet is a representation of Eddies queerness and its presence or lack thereof is an indicator of where Eddie is in his queer journey - we go from it being present but off to the side as the Diaz boys deal with Shannons death in season 3 all the way through its absence when he is dating a woman apart from in two moments - when Eddie answers a call from Buck and when Eddie is talking to Chris at Charlies house (which almost doesn’t count because it is a video call and different from every other time we see the closet) and into season 5 where we see a fair amount of it, culminating in a scene where the closet is the focus. A scene where Eddie opens the closet in front of Buck and then leaves one door ajar - the door that allows buck to see into the closet - almost as if Eddie is thinking about testing the waters! I find it very interesting that we do not see that closet until after the tsunami and then every other time we see it, its either in a scene which reenforces how domestic and husband like Buck and Eddie are, or it leads to a scene that shows the same thing (breakdown I’m looking at you!) almost as if that closet comes into existence when Eddie and Bucks relationship shifts into something more than friends!
Space Theming
The space theme has been there since the beginning - and there is a wide variety of it. When we first see Christophers room in 2x04 we have the glow in the dark stars and moon I mentioned above. we also have the star lampshade on the desk along with what appear to be an early version of the solar system mobile (its a bit blink and you’ll miss it, but you can see it in the below photo, along with a picture which says ‘you are my…’ and a crescent moon on (I have stared at the stills of that picture and I cannot figure out what the last word is!!).
In 2x07 we also see a space rocket clock when Shannon is in the room - and I think this is the only time we see that clock at all! I find this fascinating as this is the only time we see Shannon in the DIaz house and i’ve spoken before about how the use of a rocket for a clock is suggestive of a count down to blast off - almost like the set designers are trying to foreshadow Shannons departure from the universe!
Its interesting to note that in 3x04 we get almost no space theming. Chris wears some pyjamas with black planets on them when he has his nightmare - this is the first time Chris wears anything space themed and I think its interesting that ultimately it connects with both Buck and Shannon - the combination of both losing Shannon and then getting separated from Buck during the tsunami. Later on, when Eddie puts Chris to bed and figures out that Chris has been having nightmares about Shannon, the only space themed things we see are the small galazy image above Christophers head and the lamp on the desk with most of the stars are obliterated by the lamp being switched on - almost like Christophers struggles over his mothers death and the trauma of the tsunami and losing Buck during it have narrowed down his universe, to the point where he can now only see a few stars.
In 4x02 - the video chat with Carla - the mobile makes its first proper appearance and behind Eddies head on the shelf is that picture of a galaxy.
4x08 is a great episode for space! (its breaking point how could it not be!!) we have Chris in solar system pyjamas (when he’s spent an evening with Buck), we can again see the mobile several times and there are aliens on Christophers top when he runs away to Bucks (i’ll come back to them in the dinosaur section).
We can see only one space themed item when Ana is in the house in 4x13 (a space themed VR poster which we can see when Chris is talking about Charlie not having access to technology) and we can’t see it when she in the door to Christophers room.
And the mobile is not hanging in its normal place (which is very deliberate because it should be visible in this shot but as you can see its not there!
In 4x14 we see lots of space theming - there is the mobile (mysteriously returned to its position in time for Buck to enter the room for the first time on screen!) and the galaxy picture still in place, but there is also the space themed VR poster on the wall which we saw in a different position in 4x13 (see the picture above) and can be seen to Bucks side when Buck talks to Chris (why would you move this poster to here if the space theme wasn’t relevant?!)
We also have Chris’s space themed pyjamas when he wakes Buck up on the sofa.
In season 5 we only see Chis’s room in 5x06, 5x13 and then in 5x17, as of 5x15 Chris hasn’t worn anything space themed, with the exception of a star wars backpack - which it is important to note we’ve seen Eddie carrying more than Christopher has - including in the last Diaz scene of the series - when they are talking about talking about things making things better - it is a scene looking to the future, so having a space themed item is highly appropriate. We continue to see the mobile and the galaxy image on the shelf above Chris’s bed and the lamp shade still has stars on but we haven’t gained any additional space themed items.
When I look at the space theming as a whole, it is so very connected to Eddies relationships. I spoke in the wardrobe section above, about the idea that the glow in the dark stars represent the stars guided Eddie and Chris to LA they are only there for that one episode and then we don’t see them again. The rocket ship clock is interesting to me because we only see it in Shannons presence - she represents both the past and the future at one time (something that Buck has now also come to represent and I’ll explain a bit more in the dinosaur section below) and the space themed clock gives a time limit to the future she has with them. It is both a count down to her time with them, but also a count down to Eddie and Christopher as well - that they are readying themselves for the future (space) and that is why once Shannon dies, the clock disappears - almost like blast off has happened and the rocket has started its journey.
This ties in with the fact that we don’t really see space themed items starting to appear until season 3 and the first time we see any space theming it is during Christophers nightmare, its almost like Shannon has handed the batton over to Buck. We have Chris in planet pyjamas having a nightmare about his mother and the tsunami - it feels something like a moment when Shannon, who can no longer be present to help take care of Chris, hands over to Buck, who has proven himself worthy by saving Chris in the tsunami - the moment when Buck and Eddie go from friends to an undefined something more - when Buck becomes established in Christophers life, a position he has occupied ever since and after Eddie, is the most stable presence in Christophers life.
Season 4 is when we see the dinosaurs and space at war with each other - literally if you go by one of Christophers tees (which I will come back to in the dinosaurs section!). We see plenty of space themed clothing, but only ever in relation to Eddie or Buck and we never, ever see it in relation to Ana. Once Ana is gone we continue to see space themed stuff in Christophers room, and it actually gains increased prominence in 5x17 when the mobile is there literally floating behind Eddies head for almost the whole scene.
Dinosaurs
The dinosaurs have also been there from the beginning. We see them on the bedside table in 2x04, when Shannon is in Christophers room in 2x07, we see a framed grey dinosaur - this dinosaur is facing the door - the exit from the room. In 3x04 this dinosaur has gone and has been replaced by the green dinosaur head drawing, (we can only see it in the corner of the frame and we don’t see it properly until S4) which remains in place right up to the end of season 5 - this dinosaur is facing away from the door. (I couldn’t resit posting this pic because - Buck! But it is also the best image of that dinosaur!)
In 3x04 we don’t see any other dinosaurs present, which is interesting because the scene in Christopher’s bedroom revolves around Shannon, its like her death has negated the need for them and plays into the idea of dinosaurs representing old/ outdated aspects of eddies life - places he shouldn’t been looking or can no longer look. relevant as she is gone.
The rest of season 3 we don’t see Christophers room, but the dinosaurs are represented in Christophers clothes - both in relation to Ana and also Shannon and Eddies parents - in the flashback scenes of 3x15. In 3x09 Chris is wearing a tee with dinosaurs in sunglasses on.Its really hard to see but if you look closely you can just about make it out!
I initially didn’t really think much about this because there doesn’t seem to be a connection between this scene and the need for dinosaurs if they represent the past and the Shannon/Ana of it all - except for the fact this scene is the scene we see Buck and Eddie making peace with each other in the aftermath of their mistakes through season 3a. Keep this tee in mind because it actually becomes relevant later!
3x12 is an interesting one - in the scene where Ana is introduced Chris is in his school uniform, and when Eddie and Chris have their talk about Chris not wanting to go to school and about trying new things together Chis is dressed in a yellow sweater with blue t rex’s on. The once seen Christopher has with Buck - when they test out the adapted skateboard - not a dinosaur in sight!
3x15 is mostly Christopher in flashback or at school and is really interesting from a costume perspective. We see him mostly in Dinosaur clothing,I especially enjoyed the use of an army green zip front hoodie with dinosaurs on when Eddie has been discharged from the army - literally signifying that his military career is a thing of the past! (hard to see in the picture below but trust me there are dinosaurs on there!)
Conversely in the flash back scene when Eddie is getting onto the chopper that is shot down, Chris is wearing space themed clothing a subtle reference to where Eddies future lies - with Christopher.
This is further backed up by the use of the ‘EXPLORE the outdoors’ t-shirt Chris wears when on the porch when Eddie decides to escape from El Paso. We also see him in in dinosaur pyjamas twice during other flashbacks - once when Shannon leaves and another time that seems to come from a cut scene.
In season 4 the dinosaurs are around with a vengeance and theres a fun little theme that can be spotted with the costumes especially! 4x03 has Chris in a navy tee with a deinonychus design on - during the scene where Eddie receives his Hildy coffee machine from Buck - this is designed to be a nod towards Eddies views on technology being prehistoric!
then it all kicks off in 4x08 when the dinosaurs and the space theming really go into battle with one another - Breaking point really serves on all fronts! as a quick run down of all the dinosaurs in this episode - we have an explosion of dinosaurs in Christophers room - more than we’ve seen in there before. Christopher in a dino and space tee during the salad smash scene when he finds out about Ana dnd subsequently runs to Buck. Remember I said to keep that dinosaurs in sunglasses tee in mind from 3x09 - well it comes back into play here! The 911 costume team are in my opinion geniuses for doing this, because this scene in 4x08 is the next time we see Chris at Bucks loft and on the couch after 3x09 and what is he wearing I hear you ask. Well, none other than a t-shirt with a t-rex in sunglasses - with a reflection of a space ship destroying things.
A literal combination of dinosaur and space theming in one tee and the perfect metaphor for Christophers hopes etc in that moment - that space (Buck) is a safe place and can destroy the dinosaurs (Ana). To then follow this up with Chris accepting Eddies relationship with Ana through a conversation and kitchen Hug in 4x09 while wearing dinosaur pyjamas and then the scene with Eddie and Ana on the couch watching a film again with Chris in dinosaur pyjamas in 4x10 - well its very loud in its implications!!!
As for season 5 - well the dinosaurs seem to be on their way out - we see the green dinosaur drawing and the models of dinosaurs in in 5x06 and 5x17 but we don’t see them at any other time. Buck playing with dinosaur figures in Chris’s room (links to the conversation being about Ramon - and his retirement from his job in the oil industry (oil being made from the compressed carcasses of dinosaurs!)) I find it especially interesting that Buck is holding a dinosaur in this scene - a scene where Eddie confesses to having a difficult relationship with his father - playing with the idea of Buck having some grasp of what it is like to have a difficult relationship with a parent (aside from him verbalising it) but also the idea that Buck has power over Eddies past (not in a oppressive way but that he has been the one to help Eddie begin his journey of healing and recovery from the traumas of his past) - that’s part of why we see giant man v. tiny dinosaur - Buck is the one who will triumph and has been helping Eddie get to a good place - where the past no longer holds power over him. the other thing of note for S5 is that Christopher wears no Dinosaur clothing - the closest we get to it is the poisonous creatures tee in 5x01 and the sharks (which are technically dinosaurs) tee he wears in 5x10 - in a scene which very much ties into Christopher and his connection with his mother (Christmas was her thing with Chris and his worry about loosing a second parent is so deeply connected to that at Christmas time).
The thing I love most is the whole space v dinosaurs theming they have going on with the Buddie storyline - the idea of space being futuristic, and dinosaurs being outdated is fascinating - especially when you think about the concept of time because realistically space is actually older than the dinosaurs - the stars we see are old light. But at the same time, space represents all matter - the fundamental building blocks of our existence, and as we learn more we know ourselves and the world we inhabit better - space is all about learning the truth and its such an amazing concept to play with in relation to queer narratives (the idea that our queerness is a fundamental part of who we are and that it is part of the very fabric of our being in the same way that atoms of carbon, hydrogen etc are the basic building blocks of all life) space also is ever expanding and I don't for a minute think the fact that Karen is a rocket scientist is a happy coincidence - they have been playing into it since day one.
Overall the dinosaurs have been more prevalent in Christophers clothing than in his room, especially in season 5, which is interesting considering how Christophers room ties as much to Eddie as it does Christopher while his clothing speaks far more as an extension of his own thoughts/feelings and opinions, the fact we saw both dinosaurs and space theming disappear from Christophers clothing in S5 is really telling - it moves the conversation away from Christopher (and buddifer) and centres it much more on Buck and Eddie because they continue to exist in the bedroom (the place we got the last big Buddie scene of the season - which was not by chance!!) Im not expecting to see the dinosaurs back on his clothing in S6 and I have my doubts as to whether we’ll see very much space themed clothes either - as Christopher starts to pull way from Eddie. I fully expect to see the dinosaurs then disappear from the bedroom as Buck and Eddie continue to grow closer - with them being completely gone when Buddie goes canon - I guess we’ll have to wait and see as S6 unfolds!
well this got away from me rather!! if you’ve made it this far - well then I am sending you massive hugs and kisses in gratitude!!

Y’all are hilarious - getting worked up over Lucy being a love interest - she’s a character designed to reflect the aspects of Bucks character that he needs to deal with/ develop/ learn to manage - her name literally means light - as in she will shine a light on some stuff to help him in the long run.
In the same way that I assume Jonah will do the same for Hen going forward - his name means dove/pigeon - he’ll provide her with a message that will lead her to peace and greener pastures - greenway!
The are doing the exact same thing that they did with Lena - whose name also means light - she showed Eddie aspects of himself that needed to be worked on/ dealt with! And Eli means higher ground - he showed Chimney his way to better things - first as a paramedic, and then again in his search for Maddie!
I’m sure it’s been mentioned before but the whole Buck/Charlie parallels in 2x01 are actually insane esp when you compare with the later Eddie/Charlie parallels in 4/13&14
Charlie wanted to be a marine but couldn’t because he had an enlarged heart then gets a leg injury
Buck was going to be a seal but couldnt because his heart was too big (to switch it off and become a machine) gets a leg injury at the end of season 2
Charlie - being poisoned by his mom and isnt able to be who he wants to be - all comes to a head and he’s been in therapy and is living with his aunt
Eddie - ‘poisoned’ by his mom (and his dad to a certain extent, but I maintain that Helena is the bigger issue!) and unable to be who he truly is - all comes to a head and ends up in therapy, closest (in terms of distance) relationship is with his aunt Pepa!!
The idea that Buck and Eddie’s counterpoint Charlie’s reflect the part of them that is being paralleled - the adult for Buck (as Charlie would probably have been around the same age as Buck was when they tried to join the military) v the child for Eddie (who was denied his childhood and made to ‘become a man’ too soon
