Happy Whiteout day! Happy 8 years to the character of all time, oh yeah and Darkstalker too Ig.... this is a redraw of a picece from 2018!

Ok Darkstalker GN thoughts (sorry this is late I read the book a while ago)

Warning I do compare Mike and Jake’s styles just based on my own personal preference which I know people don’t like to see, FULL respect to both artists though I have good things to say about both of their work

PROS:

-The backgrounds are STUNNING, especially the Sea Kingdom 😭 even in the og novel fathom’s chapters have always been my favorite because of how pretty the scenery is described and the graphic novel goes above and beyond

-I personally prefer the way Jake draws the dragon bodies to the way Mike does, they look more animalistic and have the same limb and body proportions to Joy Ang’s style, even when they’re standing on two legs that’s not necessarily unusual for depicting dragons. There are some wonky shots but both styles have that issue, I just enjoy looking at Jake’s more (sorry but post-dark-secret mike draws the dragons WAY too thin they look like they’re gonna snap, that’s my main gripe with the mainseries gns)

-ACCURATE AGE PROPORTIONS WITH DRAGONETS VS ADULTS OH MY GOD THANK YOU

-Most of the character designs are adorable (my favorites are Thoughtful, Whiteout, Listener, Fathom, Indigo, Pearl, and Vigilance)

-Clearsight’s eyes glowing when she has a vision

CONS:

-The faces are very stiff, on some panels they remind me of the infamous Warriors Tigerstar and Sasha manga. The faces don’t squash and stretch as easily as Mike’s do and it looks kinda stupid in some shots. I wish we could see a style that combined Mike’s close-ups with Jake’s fullbodies because those are my favorite parts of each style.

-The designs are very gendered, and this is the very first time any official wof art has EVER done this so it’s very disappointing. All the female dragons have huge eyelashes that sometimes makes them a little ugly (clearsight has it the worst imo) and Darkstalker has this weird sharp jawline that looks like it’s supposed to be from his IceWing blood but ugh does it look weird in some shots

-Darkstalker is disturbed by Arctic’s death..????

-Listener’s line about her family being superstitious of seers was removed even though that was a really interesting part of her character (she’s still distrusting of foresight but it’s not said why)

OVERALL:

I like it, it’s not perfect but I didn’t really expect it to be. Cold take here but Darkstalker is my favorite book in the series so reading it in graphic novel form was really amazing 😭 no matter what negative things I said I absolutely love how they adapted it
