Experience it before forming your opinion.
This is something that comes up often in life, friendships, leadership, politics and etc. Many of us base our opinion on a topic or issue based on someone elses experience with the matter. It happens all of the time. The first example that comes to mind is the TV Show that takes the CEO's of companies and puts them into the role of a low level employee to get a different perspective. Before embarking on my 30 day sabatical by rail (#30DaysByRail) in December, I wasnt even considering doing a trip via rail. My plan was to just fly to Seattle for a month of relaxing, exploring and tons of fun with fellow young professionals. This seemed like a great idea until I attended a public meeting in Nashua, NH about the Boston to NH Capital Corridor Rail Study. I had a big opinion about the study and was one of the many other attendees that expressed our concerns, optimisms, opinions and etc. As I sat there for the meeting taking it all in, it seemed very apparent that many of the opposing people had no experience with using rail as a form of transportation and how could they have any kind of opinion without having the experience to back it up. Then it came to my mind that I had very little experience with trains in general. I had used the Amtrak Downeaster a couple times, the MBTA in Boston a few times, the RTD Light Rail in Denver for a few days and the BART Rail system in San Francisco a couple times. Overall that is not much experience with rail as a means of transportation. The research began on Amtrak.com and came up with some really great deals for rail passes that are available. I decided to purchase a 30-Day Pass and explore the U.S. and all forms of public transit including light rail and bus in each city. Now I have gone through the experience(good, bad & the ugly) of living a full month relyin on all forms of public transit. I now feel as though I can actually have a solid opinion on the matter of commuter rail as a means of transportation. Some of my opinions have been changed, some have been thrown out and some new ones have formed. Today I was having a conversation with a friend over coffee who happens to have a decent amount of influence in his community. The mention of a topic came up and a comment was made. My response was, have you ever actually experienced this? He had not although he is playing a role in the success or failure of the particular topic. We had a great conversation following about how so many of us just dont realize that we need to gather great information and experience things first hand to get the real perspective on things. It is crucial to experience how a topic will impact people.
