This isn’t an anti-TrollJim post, cuz I really love him. He’s adorable and absolutely endearing. But I think I’ve landed on yet another reason, for me personally, why this direction of the story had such a bittersweet feel to it:

Troll Jim is awesome. He charges into battle, is practically flawless on the field, plowing through the Gumm-Gumms with his sword like they’re stalks of wheat. So why do I feel so proud watching him while at the same feeling so...sad? Empty? 

Pretty much since the show’s beginning, we’ve built up on the anticipation of seeing Jim face Gunmar in that final battle and take him down once and for all. And he did. But it wasn’t our Jim. It wasn’t the one we came to know and love for 49 whole episodes. Because, yeah, that elixir really changed him. Everyone points it out. He’s Jim--on the inside--but he’s not Jim Lake Jr, that awkward sweet kid we’ve seen training in the Hero’s Forge with Blinky, Arrghh!, Toby and Claire. He’s not the same boy who challenged Strickler and faced off with Angor Rot. Bottom line, as cool as Troll Jim is, he’s just not the same as that human, good-hearted boy we were led to believe would be the doom of Gunmar. In a way, I feel like we were cheated on the story we were promised. 

That said, I still love Trollhunters endlessly. I’m not trying to drag down this wonderful show, just analyzing it from different perspectives, to see if somewhere along the way, I find the one that doesn’t leave me feeling so happy to have witnessed it, yet sad that it had to end the way it did.
