Thunder Bird Hills: Suzuka Mountain adventure

The TBH brothers set off for Mt.Oike of Suzuka Mountain.

The brothers love the cold season as, for them, it's where their adventures really begin. Suzuka is not a famous mountain, but it is quiet and beautiful, and importantly it is somewhere where they can enjoy some bushcraft activities, including a bonfire.

They found their Helinox chair a little heavy to carry, but very comfortable and despite the bit of extra weight, they do recommend it.

Thunder Bird Hills: Stairs to Hell…

With the destination of the highest peak of the Ōmine mountain range, Mt.Hakkyo, the Thunder Bird Hills brothers set out on their long journey with heavy packs.

This trip served as a reconnaissance mission to determine what kind of Japanese midwinter they might be in for.

For them it was the beginning of the "stairs to hell"! Being in poor physical condition at the time didn't help their climbs progress and heavy packs added to their misery on this seriously long trip.

But being able to admire the view from the very roof of the Kansai region was wonderful. The beautiful morning sunrise and the sea of clouds made it worth the grueling climb.

They used the Kifaru E&E as a day pack to travel from the tent to their final destination. They were impressed by the storage capacity and scalability of the pack and found it to be light and durable at the same time. They loved how it could transform from a large pouch, into an "Attack Pack" and highly recommend it.

Solo Adventure on Death's Trail

Kei embarks on an adventure alone, and choses one of the most difficult courses of the Kansai region – the Somon Trail, where distress and even death often occur.*

In the Nara prefecture, Mt. Misen was the next destination of Thunder Bird Hills brother, Kei. His chosen trail was very long, his chosen goal was a climbers mountain refuge hut near the summit. With his luggage totalling 20kg, he started out at 7:00am.

Due to the steep grade of climbing, he could not go ahead as he first expected. After six long hours, he came up to the halfway point. He grew impatient.

At 7:00pm, with darkness closing in and after 12 hours of walking without eating, he was forced to accept that he wasn't arriving at the destination that night.

Without the ability to set up a tent, unwillingly he had to bivouac. With the sheet of his tent over his head, he tried to get some rest. When the morning sun rose, he ate breakfast immediately.

Frustratingly, he arrived at his destination after only 15 minutes of continuing, it was very close to his bivouac point. He return home following a completely different route. In the words of Kei: "It was the worst adventure ever in my history."
