This time around I’m finding it’s a huge gigantic bummer talking to the tielfings after the siege, seeing how happy and hopeful they all are, and knowing exactly who I’m going to find dead on the road or simply just never ever see again. All these cute little plans they all have, but I know what happens to each of them. Makes me so damned sad.
And I mean it’s ok if it’s sad, it’s ok if it’s a tragedy, I GUESS, even if I would have preferred a happier ending for the tielfings, but… I dunno. I wish, at least if it has to be a tragedy, we got some better conclusion at the end of the game. I know a lot of players hate the tiefling refugees. I can’t relate, because I adored them, and was extremely invested in their running plots, and I felt like following their progress through the three acts was just as important to me as the big plot with the elder brain. I hated the way we just kind of left them behind in their various states of limbo act 3. I know we get tiny little tidbits of conclusions…. We help Rolan and his siblings to a nice end, we get an epilogue letter that explains how Zevlor ended up in act 3, we get newspaper articles that talk about how Bex and Danis got their shop set up, but like. I dunno. It’s not enough for me, still not satisfying. I wish, like, I dunno, I wish the surviving refugees showed up at the epilogue party to say thank you, or something. Hey? I want to see them all back together as a group, and feel like… well… maybe I couldn’t save them all, but here’s the group that’s left and here’s how they’re going to move forward, stronger for having got through that adversity, or whatever. I don’t know. Just grousing. I just felt so unexpectedly sad talking to them after the siege, knowing that half of them are going to die, some will just disappear, and most of the ones that do survive are just going to sort of cease to be important to the story at all.
I dunno! Maybe I missed the whole point of the game and the Tieflings were supposed to be temporary friends like the myconids and the harpers and the gith at the crèche and whatever. If that’s the case, well, maybe Larian shouldn’t have created all these compelling NPCs that made me like them too much and worry about them all through the game!
