Oh hey! It’s been a minute (or a month) since I’ve been in the shop, but I did finally finish the #tlcrattles dog intarsia rattle. Here are some finished pictures after the mineral oil. This rattle was designed using @tenderlovellcare Matt’s DIY template and since there was no dog rattle, I drew one myself. To make things more challenging for myself, I decided to try my first ever intarsia style cutting and glue up for a two-tone canine. I used a variety of methods to cut the shapes, but the one that worked best was a stacked layer of maple and walnut, cutting the exterior and interior details on the bandsaw, drilling pilot holes, then cutting a second set of detail pieces in contrasting woods and painstakingly sanding, dry fitting and repeating until it was as perfect as my skills would allow. If you pinch and zoom, you can probably pick out some gaps, but I think I did pretty well keeping them even and back filling with the right color sawdust to hide them. The heart bead is obviously Purple Heart and it’s held in place with a walnut wedged tenon. The rattle was finish sanded to 320 then wet to raise the grain and then resanded up to 600. It is buttery smooth. Swipe through the pics for some detail shots and my muse, Shea, at the end. . , . . . . . . #wood #woodwork #woodworker #woodworking #diy #doitforyourself #handmade #handcrafted #finewoodworking #rattle #babyrattle #teethingtoy #accessories #etsy #etsyshop #etsyseller #maker #buylocal #buysmall #nj #PA #newjersey #pennsylvania #thejawnshop https://www.instagram.com/p/BvXMD5VgRaZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16dlv4vvtwgr7
