Here's the full video (I hope) of the gears in action and their failure. The story cut off at the "good" part when all the cracking started. Watch till the end for the real failure point and turn your sound up for the full effect. I rarely get to 100% on a first try inventing something, so I was expecting to encounter problems and then come up with ways to solve them for the next version. I'm not upset about this failure, this is just how the inventing process works. If you were following along yesterday in my stories, thanks! Even if the gears did work as planned, I didn't take into account the clearance needed on the interior, so I'll have to countersink all the bolts next time. A real engineer could probably tell you from the weight of the tool how much of a mechanical advantage is required to effectively reduce the weight down to something manageable, but I don't have the math background for that, so I'm doing some trial and error. I think the tool weight is something like 92 lbs, if any engineers want to do the math and tell me what kind of gear reduction is actually required. (@kraftedbyengineer @rogue_engineer ?) The next version will have a much beefier axle gear with a through-bolt, which was the primary failure here (and poorly cut gear teeth). I'm not sure if I have enough of a gear reduction either, there was a TON of strain on the gears right as the planer was coming up at the end. I may need a lot more teeth on my big gears or I may switch to a worm drive once I redo the big axle gear (which will require a new, longer axle and the removal of the tool to complete, so it'll be a while). I'll be working on this off and on over the rest of the fall, so stay tuned.
