International Dance Day 2021

International Dance Day is April 29, first established by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute in 1982 to mark the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), the creator of modern ballet. To celebrate we present To Dance, an altered book created by Wisconsin book artist Stephanie Copoulos-Selle and printed from 1999-2000 at her Citron Press in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in an edition of 25 copies signed by the artist.

Copoulos-Selle deconstructed a textbook on international topics and overprinted the page spreads with images of dancers from all over the world accompanied by a rhythmic text that supplies the beat as one moves through the book:

STEP, quiver, turn, turn, JUMP STOMP, vibrate, whirl, whirl, whirl, FLY leap, TWIST, hypnotic, writhe, writhe, writhe, DART lunge, SHUFFLE, ripple, stretch

we dance, we will dance, we danced . . . .
