The Meaning of Colours in Spellwork
Colours have different means to plenty of different people, in different cultures, countries and so on! In witchcraft even the meanings of colours tend to shift here, but there are some common associations the colours tend to have.
So i thought i'd list for you some of the typically seen meanings of colours used in spellwork! Usually these meanings are applied to tools like candles or paper to help set the intention of the spell.
Hopefully this can help you with your craft!
Feel free to add on what your personal interpretations are as well!
Going in rainbow order!
Red
Red is typically associated with passion, romance, lust, physical energy, courage.
Red candles are often burned for health and protection.
Red is also associated with the root chakra
Orange
Orange is typically associated with creativity, confidence, motivation, clearity, concentration and productive energy!
Eating an orange when you find yourself stuck on a project can help boost you creative juices!
The colour orange is best for helping with blocks in your life be it blocked thoughts, writers block and so on!
Yellow
Yellow seems to be commonly associated with themes of joy, happiness, protection, inspiration and communication, a bit similar to orange as theyre close on the colour spectrum.
yellow is associated with the solar plexus chakra, so many see it as a colour for self-empowerment.
yellow can also be a colour for knowledge, confidence, and studying so yellow might be great for education related spellwork.
Green
green is well known to be used in wealth and abundance spells, as well as growth and plant or earth magic.
a bit less commonly known but still common, green is associated with health, luck, and fertility.
a tip ive seen a lot is to wear something green or keep a leaf in your wallet to attract more money. you could paint your nails green, write something down on your leaf and keep it in your pocket or use a green candle for spellwork!
Blue
blue is best known for being tide to emotional magic, commonly used for magic to ease anxieties, worries and stresses.
I have also seen blue be used in dream or sleep spellwork, peace, wisdom, patience and protection work.
but must commonly, blue is used amongst witches who use water in their practice witch holds a lot of the same associations as well.
Purple
probably the most common colour in spiritual work, even seen being used for ghost and psychic types in pokemon, purple is common amongst divination work.
purple is also commonly used in cleansing, intuition, creativity magic.
purple is connected to the crown chakra, royalty and can seen being used when working with dieties. some people say to wear purple to work even (possibly because it has a similar calming effect to blue so having something purple can help you keep your cool and confidence.)
Pink
pink is seen in relation to pure, innocent love, friendship, healing, and self love magic.
pink is a very sweet colour used in very wholesome sweet magic, a pink candle would be great for magic used on yourself in regards to love and healing.
pink flowers seem to brighten a room much similar to how yellow flowers would, so it can be considered a ward against negative energy and feelings at times!
Brown
brown is seen in all sorts of earth related crafts, perhaps a bit more than green is.
brown is very grounding. brown crystals and stones can be very helpful with grounding during panic attacks and so on as well as helping with your connection to earth.
brown is also associated with strength, solidity, endurance, home and animal companions.
Black
you might see a lot of people saying not to use black. well heres a pro-tip! black is GREAT for protection and warding and you should absolutely use it if you feel its right.
black can be used to protect you against almost anything negative, black crystals can help ward against negative spiritual energy.
black veils are often used to cover mirrors and crystal balls for spiritual reasons.
black is heavily used in banishment, protection, stability and spirituality.
White
white, commonly known as a sort of "catch all" as white candles are great stand ins for other colours and clear or white quartz is great as a stand in for other crystals or protection.
white is also good for regeneration, cleansing, rejuvenation, purity, truth, peace and blessings.
white can be seen in all forms of witchcraft, being more popular as a "positive" 'colour' than others.
Silver
silver is heavily associated with lunar work, intuition and truth. sometimes silver is used in divination work, dream work, and astral work.
silver can also be associated with femininity and psychic abilities.
you may find silver in work related to wisdom, intelligence and memory.
Gold
gold, like green, is associated with wealth and monetary gain.
gold is also seen in deity work as offerings.
you can use gold in success spellwork!
gold is also used in regards to inner-strength, ambition, self-realization and understanding.
grey/gray
a very neutral and not commonly used 'colour' but i still felt like adding it in.
grey is often used for contemplation, stability, and decision making.
if youre having a hard time making up your mind on things and want to use magic to figure it out, grey seems like a good choice to add in to your spell work.
