Tibbs was good at noticing when something wasn’t right. It was a skill he’d acquired in the army; being able to look at a situation, a location, and figure out what did and didn’t fit was a good skill to have, and a necessary one. He liked to think he was quite good at it, but in the end he hadn’t managed to spot the incoming disaster that had left him with a twinge in his back and wiped out his military career, so maybe he wasn’t as good as he thought.
But standing just in front of the nurse’s station, he knew that something was wrong. He could feel it in his very bones, and for a moment he stood, his eyes scanning the hallway. It was empty, for once, no nurses rushing backwards and forwards or interns racing each other to theatre to get the best surgery. It was just him...
And the stock cupboard, whose door had been left strangely ajar.
Tibbs edged nearer to it, being careful as he did. If someone was in there stealing, looking for a fix of something, he’d have to make sure they didn’t lash out. He reached inside carefully and flicked on the light, illuminating the patient within. He cleared his throat. “Sir? You can’t be in here.”
