Talk about lying on the witness stand....
i think todd manning in particular is a really interesting example. because honestly, i don't think i would ship todd and blair as hard without the 2011-2013 era. not just because of the victor reveal and the fact thst recasts can affect shipping, but also because todd basically comes back a changed man. he's still a liar and a manipulator but he's also a lot softer than the todd he introduced us to way back when.
i rewatched the infamous belt scene yesterday (really difficult to watch but roger and kassie at the top of their game), and i can't imagine the todd who came back ever doing anything like that ever again. he openly acknowledges that he is a 🍇ist and doesn't make excuses for himself the way he used to. roger was always really insistent that todd had to stay a villain, and i totally agree. his scar is a constant physical reminder of who and what he is. "this guy has a relationship with marty saybrooke, and you couldn't tell that he wasn't me?" was totally the writers trying to backtrack on the re-🍇 and it must have been really satisfying for him to say (marty/susan haskell you deserved so much better). to this day, there are people who still ship todd and marty, and i so respech roger and susan for refusing to pull a luke and laura.
the todd who comes back in 2011 has 8 years of time with blair and his children to make up for. he's (relatively...for todd) matured and all that history between him, blair, and starr plays incredibly well in contrast to the "beast" they knew. without that character growth (minus the baby switch and attempted murder), they wouldn't be as shippable or interesting to me. idk how to explain it so not sure if this is making any sense.

Soaps All-Time Most Romantic Couples
Todd Manning & Blair Cramer (Tender Trap)
When Llanview’s local pariahs, Todd and Blair, first hooked up, their neighbors didn’t know whether to be terrified (of what plot they might hatch) or relieved (that they were off the market). As it happened, either reaction would have been fitting. In the years that followed, the on-again/off-again couple schemed as foreplay, wreaking havoc on their hometown, but always saving their cruelest tricks for each other. By now, no doubt can remain that their love is mutual and powerful. The only question is, will they ever be able to channel their feelings in a way that doesn’t leave a path of destruction in their wake?
[No other woman in Llanview has been able to make Todd see red quite like his soul(less)mate, Blair]
