It is a genetic mutation (and apparently its an dominant trait? idk. also no one in my family has it. i am riddled with mutations oh no)
It is sometimes called a royal's thumb, it was seen as a sign of royalty, which also means it can also be caused by inbreeding (im not inbred I promise)
It is most commonly found in israel and japan (which i am not, i think)
It is about 2% of the population, which is almost the same as red hair and intersex
