Can you elaborate on why it’s inappropriate? I’m not attracted to men so I find it a bit tiresome at times but these are all completely fictional adult characters. Not trying to be rude, I’m just wondering if there’s more going on that I’m not seeing or something.
I see you're referencing my recent post about the over-sexualization of certain Tolkien characters. And honestly, my answer is multifaceted.
First of all, call me old-fashioned, but I think there's a proper place and context for sexual stuff. Blasting whatever nsfw thought comes to your mind all over Tumblr (or wherever) isn't it.
Secondly, it's straight up objectifying sometimes. If the characters were real people, it would honestly be shameful just to post stuff about them that make a big deal about their body parts or what we think they do behind closed doors. To a lot of us, fictional characters can be very real - and in any case, some of the things I come across that people say about them are just sort of dehumanizing. How would *you* like it if we constantly made posts about that stuff with *you* as the subject? After a while, with some of them, it's like, Do you even remember that this character is a person? That they have a role in a bigger story? Or are they just an object to project all your nsfw thoughts onto? It gets icky when every other post of character art shows them wearing something super revealing...like, they're not a lingerie model, ok?? I try to just scroll past the offensive stuff, but I still notice some of what's going on.
Another thing for me, at least when it comes to Tolkien characters, is that I can't help but see many of them as almost saints, if that makes sense? So seeing the over-sexualization some of them are treated with feels irreverent. I'm not saying every post about them has to be serious (I myself have made my share of goofy ones). But there's a point where it just becomes disrespectful. And not to sound like an old person, but sometimes I do think much of society has simply lost our sense of respect, of the proper reverence for our fellow humans, of what's appropriate when and where.
And maybe some of that is similar to the sense of wrongness we feel when we see someone who's been filmed in public without their consent, especially if it's in a vulnerable moment. Now, I know fictional characters can't really give their consent about anything, and that's part of how we're free to write fanfic - but again, where's the basic respect? Where's the remembering and acknowledging of humanity, and that some things should just not be made a big deal out of for all to see?
Ok, that's the end of my controversial rant. 😊
I hope it's helped answer your question.
