The end came quickly. On April 30, with Russian troops on his doorstep, Hitler killed himself in his bunker in Berlin. On May 4, German forces in Holland, Denmark, and northwest Germany surrendered to British Field Marshal Montgomery. The new “sleep nook” for servicemen, adjoining their lounge at Grand Central Terminal, opened at midnight on March 9, 1944, and immediately made a hit with tired troops in transit. The nook contained 75 steamer chairs and blankets and was open daily from midnight to 6 p.m. Sleepy soldiers and sailors filled the comfortable "berths." The Travelers Aid Society of New York sponsored the nook for naps between trains and for those servicemen who could not find hotel accommodations.

A silver-sprayed 75-foot high Norway spruce sparkles after its 7,500 bulbs were lighted for the first time in Rockefeller Center, December 9, 1949. At the same time, floodlights from buildings in the center were beamed onto the promenade where 48-spray-like metal plumes, erected in the promenade, held pinwheels designed as snow flakes. With the Cold War, preparations for air raids existed long past the end of World War II. Here, the city's Civil Defense Director, Arthur W.
