Detroit made a signing to help bolster their bullpen by inking Milwaukee Brewer Tom Gorzelanny, 32, to a one-year contract. Gorzelanny will make $1 million for the season of 2015. Gorzelanny appeared in 23 games for the Brewers last season, throwing 21 innings and boasting a 0.86 ERA and throwing 23 K's. Gorzelanny has also played for the Washington Nationals, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates, and was primarily a starter until the 2011 season.
With Gorzelanny having a long history as a starter and reliever, it's possible Detroit is looking to have him in the bullpen for most of the season, but also have him as a backup starter should injuries become an issue. It also adds a much needed left-handed pitcher in the relief position.
Luke Putkonen, 28, was designated for assignment with the roster move to make room. Putkonen only made 2 appearances in the 2014 season, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up 8 ER, slapping him with a whopping 27.00 ERA. Before the 2014 season, he had a strong 2013 campaign and a solid 2012 rookie season with Detroit.
