#tonic immobility

Why is this the first time I've heard anyone explicitly say that helplessness is a major risk factor for a traumatic experience resulting in long term issues? People are less likely to develop PTSD and other long-term trauma symptoms if they're able to move and do something to protect themselves.

Which makes it feel even more cruel and unfair that the freeze response and tonic immobility exist. I knew that tonic immobility is a predictive factor when it comes to PTSD, but this makes it sound like a potential causative factor. Gee, thanks brain!

Tonic Immobility During a sexual assault, the victim’s perceived sense of threat can trigger a completely uncontrollable response—known as tonic immobility (TI)—that can include eye closure and paralysis. With TI, a victim may experience an uncontrollable response in extremely fearful situations; have increased self-blame resulting in a decreased likelihood to seek help; and/or w be inaccurately attributed with consent, if law enforcement does not understand TI’s effect on victims.

Y’know how with sharks(?) if you flip them upside down they just… freeze? (Forgot what it was called)

If I were to just… flip Lunar… would he just buffer either out of confusion of what just happened or because his world was suddenly flipped upside down and he needs to process what the hell just happened?

And for SK AU (because I’ve been neglecting them for whatever reason): what activities do Sun and Moon like to do when they’re regressed??

No, none of the fairies suffer tonic immobility XD but it would be a little funny. He'd be very confused for a few seconds before immediately trying to swipe at what's got him flipped around, haha!

Tonic immobility is a reflex that causes a temporary state of inactivity in an animal. Similar to hypnosis. When the shark is gently turned on their back, it's thought to disorientate them, causing them to enter the state. ( text from wiki)

I was thinking about how orcas flip sharks over, induce tonic immobility and then rip out and eat *only* the liver-- which does sound a bit like psychopath behavior until you realize that sharks are mostly liver.

Anyway, I also saw something (probably here on tumblr) claiming that whales can only hold their breath for a shockingly short amount of time, like 30 minutes.

So the Great White shark's Achilles heel is being upside down and the whale's is being underwater.

And I'm sure giant squid have tried, but I wonder why more animals don't take advantage of this. Of course, it must be hard to hold down a whale. Maybe some day a little fish or skate or gelatinous blob creature will evolve to cover up the blowhole and then a thousand of its little friends would have a feast!

I guess this all depends on whether whales can also breath through their mouths though. They can't right?

So some sharks when they’re upside down they go into a state of tonic immobility, do you think the same thing would happen to some shark mers? It’s just a funny image to me a shark mer ranting about something that made them angry and getting all upset and worked up and their friend just kinda rolls them over and they’re just staring for a second cause they can’t do anything

I've had asks along this line before and it never gets old. I love it. Yes. All the yes. Consensual 'putting friends/lovers into tonic immobility for a quick timeout'.
