Top 10 DCOMs 10/10: Minutemen

Minutemen is the most underrated OG DCOM. This movie is a crazy adventure with good humor and a lot of good lessons for kids. It was the start of some of the biggest names in Disney Channel history including Jason Dolley, Luke Benward, Nicholas Braun and Chelsea Staub.

This movie is pretty different. Three high school losers band together to build a very successful time machine and end up using it to help out other high school losers. This movie is a crazy adventure from the moment Charlie brings up the idea of time travel to when the minutemen take their last trip back in time. They change some little things that end up having really big effects on people and timelines and even a black hole. This movie really showed how much time travel can screw things up before The Flash did.

At the beginning of the movie we meet Virgil the main character. Virgil’s a pretty good guy who just wants to help a picked on kid and he ends up getting picked on with him. Virgil is deep down a really good guy who just wants to help people out. He’s the one who thought of the idea of using time travel to help out losers in the first place. He tries to be funny but most of the time people aren’t laughing with him they’re laughing at him. Virgil kind of gets lost in the popularity but in the end he realizes who his true friends are. Charlie is a young genius who just can’t help being awkward. Throughout the movie he’s just a really good friend who wants to do the right thing. Zeke is a really quiet big teddy bear who’s not afraid to tell you the truth straight to your face. They fit together really well and give us some really funny and sweet moments. Jeanette is very quirky and kind of annoying but her and Charlie are kind of cute. Stephanie is a really awesome character because she manages to stay true to herself no matter what the minutemen change about the timeline. She’s really sweet and smart and always stays that way. I think her and Virgil were really cute together. They were always best friends first. Derek is a giant douchebag and I never liked him.

I think the best thing about this movie is that is has a lot of good messages but it doesn’t shove them down your throat in a really cheesy way like a lot of DCOMs. It really shows you what true friendship is and his popularity can change people but also how some people will always stay the same. It’s just overall a really fun and entertaining movie.

Top 10 DCOMs 7/10:

Teen Beach Movie

Teen Beach Movie is one of the most underrated and best newer DCOMs I’ve watched. It’s so freaking fun and cute.

This movie is the epitome of old cheesy musicals and movies and love stories and all of the cliches that come with them. It’s cheesy but there’s never a time that I cringe or shake my head at how cheesy it is because the acting is done so well that it just comes off as funny or cute and I think that’s hard to do. It has two different love stories that are opposites attract in different ways and the dance choreography that everyone randomly seems to know perfectly when the song comes on which are just some of the common cliches found in this movie. I honestly think the acting really saves this movie from being unbearably cringy and just bad.

I think Brady and McKenzie are freaking amazing main characters and who doesn’t love Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell. They are both just amazing, nice and easy to like. Brady is easygoing and just enjoys life and Mack is so strong and determined and smart. They are absolutely perfect for each other. They are opposites in the best way. Brady makes Mack relax more and Mack makes Brady get a little more focused and determined. They also both share a love for surfing that really helps them connect which is so nice to see. They are best friends at heart and they truly care about each other and want the other to be happy. They are a wonderful example of a normal healthy high school relationship, especially in the second movie when they drift apart because of a different environment but they still manage to come together again. The scenes where they fought over her leaving in the first movie and most of the fighting scenes in the second movie broke my heart. I really loved/hated the ending to the second movie. Lela and Tanner are really good secondary characters. Grace and Garrett are so good at being so ditzy. They were practically made for each other and their ditziness matches perfectly. It’s nice to see them grow as characters through the movies and really find out who they are and what they really like.

The sets and costumes are done really well in this movie. They are the perfect amount of over the top and have just the right amount of summer vibes to them. The songs are really fun. My favorite are probably Cruising for a Bruisin and Meant to Be. They’re just fun and simple with wonderful choreography and an infectious grooviness. I really like the way they modernize the movie characters in this movie and bring them together in the end. If you’re looking for a really well done fun cute summer movie this is it.

Top 10 DCOMs 9/10: Descendants

Descendants is the best new DCOM series. I’m a sucker for fairy tale retellings and this one is so unique and fun.

I love the idea behind Descendants. They put a very modern twist on all of the fairy tale characters we know and love but they still stay very true to who we know them to be. This movie is all about their children too which is something that I have never seen and I love it. They also still keep everything very magical and fun which is nice.

I love all four of the main characters. They probably have the best acting in the whole movie too. They are all kind of crappy and mean in the beginning but it’s really nice to see them turn around and choose good over evil. Mal is sassy and really clever and she always takes charge. I think she changes the most and she really is very good and genuinely sweet and funny on the inside. Evie is very underrated and forgotten. She’s always ready to help and she’s super smart and sweet. She’s just really easy for me to like. Evie and Mal’s friendship is really sweet. They tell each other everything and are always there to lift each other up. Carlos is really innocent and sweet and down to earth. He just needs some love and friendship. Jay is pretty quiet but he’s pretty funny and he’s a really good friend. He has his own charm to him. Carlos and Jay’s friendship is really cute too. They’re like brothers. They make fun of each other but they stick up for each other too. The core four friends are really like a family and I love that. Ben is really awesome. He genuinely wants what’s best for everyone and isn’t afraid to stand up for what’s right. He’s pretty smart and sweet too. Him and Mal are adorable. He sees her for who she really is and she’s honest with him and gets him to loosen up a little. Doug is pretty awesome too. He’s smart and sweet and honest and him and Evie are adorable. They bring out different sides of each other and like each other for who they really are on the inside. Most of the acting from the parents is kind of cringy to me besides Fairy Godmother and Maleficent. Fairy Godmother is so sweet and happy it’s ridiculous and Maleficent is so evil and selfish it’s ridiculous.

The plot moves along quickly and the movie isn’t super exciting but it’s not boring or predictable. It’s kind of funny watching the core four friends try and figure out how to take the wand and fail. The sets for the Isle of the Lost are really good and I absolutely love the core four’s costumes. They are so edgy and freaking awesome and creative. The music is really good and very modern and fun. My favorites are Rotten to the Core, Did I Mention, If Only and Set It Off. The choreography is really good and fun and kind of hip hop-ish. This movie is very fun and new and unique and perfect for kids and tweens.

11. Cheetah Girls (especially One World)

Who doesn’t love Cheetah Girls? I mean come on they’re a spunky and fun girl group with some awesome songs and great friendship.

12. The Luck of the Irish

It’s definitely of the most Irish movies I’ve seen and while it’s kind of very stereotypical and out there it’s pretty good.

13. Let It Shine

This movie is very underrated. It’s a mostly black cast which is awesome especially when you don’t see that much in Disney Channel and it’s got a really cute love story with some awesome rapping.

14. The Color of Friendship

This movie really shows that the color of your skin shouldn’t matter and you should love everyone. Even if not all kids understand why their races matter it’s still awesome for kids to see that. The friendship and main characters are just really cute and awesome.

15. Radio Rebel

I feel like this is a very underrated newer-ish (at least for me) Disney Channel movie that needs more love. Debby Ryan is really awesome as Tara. She’s a really awesome insecure character and it’s even more awesome to see her overcome her insecurities. Tara and Gavin are really cute too.

Top 10 DCOMs 6/10: Smart House

Smart House is the best OG DCOM. It’s honestly has very new age concept for when it came out. It’s both very nice and sweet and also kind of scary.

As a kid this movie was very cool. The house was every kid’s dream. It could make whatever food you wanted, the whole wall could become a screen with a video on it and the floor could absorb and trash or spills. It definitely keeps your attention even though it is kind of unrealistic. Katey Sagan does an amazing job as Pat. She manages to seem very helpful and nice in the beginning and she does an awesome job at getting slightly creepier and scarier as the movie goes on while staying very convincing. Her voice is one of the major reasons this movie is so amazing. She really did genuinely scare me as a kid because she had so much power over them.

Ben honestly was kind of my least favorite character now that I think about it. He wasn’t the worst but he was just kind of annoying, irresponsible and stupid. The moments he had with his dad and Angie were really good though. He did the annoyed and bossy big brother really well and the moments where he opened up with his dad and Angie about his mom were nice and sweet. Angie is pretty awesome. She smart and not the most annoying little sister I’ve seen. She’s also pretty sassy but you kind of have to be when you’re the youngest. I would know. Nick is a wonderful father and person. He does everything he can for the kids and he’s just a really good guy. I really liked the romance between him and Sara. She was smart and nice and he definitely deserved someone like her. The relationships in the family were really nice to see and done really well. This is just a good, fun, different movie meant for kids.
