Toracon 2016: My Experience

This is kind of a long post, but I’m gonna ramble a little on my first time participating in Artist Alley, mostly on what I learned and how I felt.

Artist Alley was definitely a unique experience. I had been to Toracon before in 2014 as a normal con goer, but never before to sell art. I had mixed feelings to say the least. As you can imagine, a no named artist selling all original work was never going to do well, and to no surprise, I didn’t. I sold 2 sketch commissions and one poster of Haruko. Honestly I’m just glad one poster sold. However, it was a trying time for me, as one prone to depression I began to question the quality of my art several times throughout the day, but the overwhelming compliments from the amazing cosplayers and con goers helped me get through the day (not saying my art is perfect, I’m always looking to improve and the constructive criticism I received was fantastic.) There were two key factors that ensured my sales were as minimal as they were: my location and lack of fan art.

My friend, Lunecho and I were placed all the way in the back and by the time people got to us, they were broke, but even so, that was a miniscule detriment compared to the lack of fan art. Lunecho and I had agreed to not touch on fanart for the con because the rules were vague and made it seem as though we would get removed from the con if we even sketched a character not belonging to us. Yet the first thing we saw as we were setting up, were fan arts on the “do not sell” list. Lunecho was lucky he had made original work more accessible to others since he drew the zodiacs. I learned very quickly that I had messed up, focusing all my efforts on posters of my OCs.

Needless to say, by the end of the con we both felt heartbroken in some degree, but we took that as a learning experience. And while the thought of the con still stings, I’ve learned what I should focus more on for the time being until I build a larger fan base. I’m almost certain that next Toracon, things will be better!

Oh and before I forget, the con itself wasn’t bad. It was just our selling experiences. The staff and con goers were very polite and I have never met nicer people! I honestly look forward to next year.
