To Thine Self Be True

I've heard this saying more times then I can remember. In my experience it’s usually accompanied with some cute little message about always being yourself, and I've used it as such, but recently I’m starting to think there’s more to it... 

Self-honesty is not an easy task and it isn't a one-dimensional explanation of one’s self to the world.  I believe it’s taking a deep appraisal, an honest and raw inventory; a humble look at our character. “It’s admitting everything that I don’t want anyone to know..” It’s looking yourself in the eye- defects, assets, fears, and joys, and embracing the truth of your being. 

To Thine Self Be True, today means being honest with myself, calling my own bullshit and doing something about it. Why kid myself? I can blame anybody or anything for circumstances or I can look at my part. From there I am free. From there I can keep on moving, accept my shortcomings, and do something different.

It can be terrifying; admitting I am not who I’d like you to think I am. Oh, but how glorious it is! In the words of Solomon, “Dark I am, but lovely...”.  I am not who I’d like to think I am. Good news because there’s more to life than that. Today I am ok with the darkness within. I see it in me and I am ok with it in you. It’s not who I am but it’s part of me. What complex beings we really are in this clusterfuck of existence.
