Underused Ways to Show a Character Is a Narcissist
Everyone writes arrogance. But narcissism is usually quieter and stranger than that.
Here are some underrused ways to show a character is a narcissist (without saying "they were a narcissist).
⢠They turn every story into one about themselves within three sentences
⢠They āapologizeā by explaining why their reaction was justified
⢠They remember compliments perfectly and forget criticism instantly
⢠They give advice no one asked for, then act offended if it isnāt taken
⢠Asking questions about someone, but mainly to compare or one-up
⢠They repeat other peopleās ideas later as if they came up with them
⢠They praise someone⦠right before asking them for something
⢠Guilt-tripping rather than openly demanding things
⢠Being very different depending on who is watching
⢠Doing good things publicly but resenting them privately if they go unnoticed
⢠Theyāre charming in public and dismissive the second the audience leaves
⢠Giving āsupportā that somehow ends with them being praised
⢠They listen just long enough to wait for their turn to talk
⢠Fishing for compliments in indirect ways (self-deprecating comments as an example)
⢠They frame generosity like a favor you now owe them for
⢠Becoming noticeably colder if they donāt receive attention
⢠They retell conflicts in ways that erase their role in them
⢠They react to boundaries like theyāre personal attacks
They rarely take true responsibility. Even when apologizing, it often sounds like:
āIām sorry you felt that way.ā
āI didnāt mean it like that.ā
āYou misunderstood me.ā
(Assuming they apologize at all)
⢠Theyāre very interested in how things look from the outside
⢠Turning feedback into proof that people are āagainst them.ā
⢠Always negatively gossiping about others
⢠Acting hurt or disappointed when someone says "no"
⢠Always pushing boundaries
A narcissistic character rarely thinks theyāre the villain.
In their version of the story, theyāre always the most reasonable person in the room.
Those are some quick tips. Reblog if you want more!
