The berries of Sambucus ebulus (dwarf elder, dwarf elder, Dane's blood, Daneweed, deadwort) form a display on the erect, usually unbranched stems which grow from a perennial underground stem rhizome. This species though low growing is not ideal for small gardens because it spreads aggressively. Traditionally it has been used as a medicinal plant but with care as it is also toxic.

Spreading over a border at the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall, Essex, UK, are plants of Euphorbia characias subsp. wulfenii (Mediterranean spurge) which have increased by seeding. This erect, sparsely-branched sub-shrub forms an impressive mound of evergreen leaves and in early spring there will be large, rounded heads of greenish-yellow flower bracts. When working with this plant or placing it by pathways be aware that it has an irritant, milky sap.

Scenes From My Walk - Myrtle Spurge - Poisonous if you get the milky sap on your skin, can cause blindness if you get it in your eyes and is also serious if ingested. About the toxicity: The plant's milky sap can cause significant skin and eye irritation in humans and may cause blindness with contact with the eyes. The plant causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea when ingested. Goggles, gloves and protective gear is often used when removing plants. Children are more susceptible than adults to symptoms from myrtle spurge, suggesting play areas not in proximity to the species. This patch of Myrtle Spurge has grown rapidly. I was a bit dismayed to see it still growing. I asked a tenant if she could alert someone and she said she’d tell the groundskeeper. Clean, delicate, fresh, sweet and a little spicy, with hints of lemon, is how I would describe the uplifting aroma of lily of the valley flowers.
