"I still think about him sometimes..."
"Who?"
"Him."
love how “live slug reaction” niche SW moment meme explosion reminds me of 2015 star wars tumblr when TFA just came out… miss the days of “tell that to kanjiklub” or “TR-8R”… glad there is at least one more iconic meme to come from the sequels
The Elite Praetorian Guard are to the Knights of Ren, what TR-8R is to Phasma; Specifically, Phasma and the Knights of Ren have distinct, unique appearances and were highly hyped up, given unique names and even backstories (not individually for the Knights though), etc., there’s lore to these people. However, Phasma and the Knights of Ren proceeded to do just about nothing besides stand there and get killed fairly quickly in an anticlimactic battle, if you could really call it that.
Meanwhile, TR-8R and the Elite Praetorian Guard WERE known and they were advertised in media and merchandise… But besides that, nobody was really paying attention to them, because there was nothing to question nor speculate on. Their appearance and existence made sense and that was it, and they served their purpose for a single scene before being killed off, having no lore nor history or connections beyond that specific role they played in the film; And yet, they stand out as having an actual, decent fight scene that is memorable and interesting. They still go out and are irrelevant within the hierarchy, yet they prove a name for themselves regardless.
Likewise, TR-8R and the Elite Praetorian Guards are all identical to other nameless mooks; In the Praetorians’ case, they’re identical to one another. There is SOME visual variance and whatnot, but it’s always shared as pairs and there’s nothing unique to a select individual; Unlike the Knights of Ren, they have no names nor particularly unique arsenals or appearances, it’s all the same backstory and personality and lack of face. Despite this, their fight scene actually lasts and is given genuine gravitas and focus, instead of just flashing by the screen quickly, even if stuff technically happened.
