Take a Chance On Me: Ch 1

Inspired by @baz-the-cat‘s wonderful headcanon! Thank you everyone for the support of and interest in this fic! Shoutout to the wonderful @fuxkbaz for being the supportivest! Summary: Simon Snow comes home from rehearsal just in time to see a cute boy run by. "But, Peter, how to we get to Neverland?"

I draw myself to my full height, trying to boast the same ridiculous confidence that only Peter Pan could claim. "Fly, of course!"

Agatha looks ridiculous holding up her costume dress to take a step closer towards me, but I don't let myself laugh. "Fly?"

My fingers curl around the rolled-up script, but I resist the urge to check it. I know this. Agatha and I spent countless hours going over the script this summer, even though we don't need to have it memorized for another week.

"It's easy!" I jump onto the set bed, and feel all eyes on me. I don't mind. "All you have to do is to... is to... is to... huh, that's funny..."

"What's the matter?" Agatha takes another step closer, momentarily forgetting to face the audience, but she remembers after half a second, and rights herself. I sneak a smile at her. "Don't you remember?"

"Oh, sure!" I leap over to the next bed, throwing my arms out for balance. As usual, the bed slides when I land on it, but this time I keep my balance. "It... It's just that I never thought about it before!" I pause for effect, before throwing my arms out again. "Say!" I walk carefully over the sheets to perch on the edge of the bed, facing the hypothetical audience directly. "That's it! You think of a wonderful thought!"

I jump down animatedly, and this time, the combination of socks and slippery stage floor doesn't end well. I land on my back, and open my eyes to see all three Darlings, and Tinker Bell, glaring down at me. Dazed, I smile at them. Agatha rolls her eyes, but Trixie offers her hand. The only thing I think as she pulls me up is, I'm going to have glitter on me for days. "Thanks, Tink!" I joke, and she laughs easily. I smile sheepishly, tapping my script against my leg.

"That's it for today," Miss Possibelf calls. "We'd better stop before Simon breaks--or the stage does." I squint to see her standing before the edge of the stage. The rest of the crew is sitting in the auditorium seats, no longer even pretending to pay attention. I hadn't noticed how long we'd been here. Or how sore my legs were.

Miss Possibelf makes a few more announcements (I really have to work on my balance) before setting us free. I make my way behind the stage with Agatha. "Nice landing, Peter." She smiles and I elbow her side, even though I can tell she isn't trying to mock me. In our seven years of friendship, she's never once acted like my clumsiness is a problem.

Trixie Picks appears on Agatha's other side. I marvel at the tightness of the blonde bun she somehow wrangled her hair into; it looks painful. As does her grin--she doesn't do anything halfway. "Need a ride?"

I can't tell if she's talking to both of us or not, so I don't say anything.

Agatha gives her the angelic smile she gives everyone not in our immediate circle. I don't even think she does it on purpose. "My dad's already on his way, but thanks, Trix."

Trixie's energy doesn't waver. "Damn! Another time, then?" She skips ahead of us without waiting for an answer.

Agatha's eyes follow her, her head tilted, her lips pursed in thought.

I don't ask her about it. "We're meeting at Penny's later."

Her eyes forward, she puts on the same smile she gave to Trixie a moment ago. "I have a tennis lesson."

"At night?"

She doesn't answer, just plants herself on the backstage couch and pulls her shoes on. I can't remember when exactly things started to get awkward in our group, but I almost never see Agatha, Penny, and Micah at the same time.

Maybe Penny and Micah just want to be a couple now, instead of a group. Agatha's always been better at noticing these things.

"Thanks, Dr. Wellbelove! See you tomorrow, Ag!" I slam the door behind me and wave to Agatha in the passenger's seat. Her smile is a quick, distracted one. She's always distracted lately, for reasons I can't even attempt to guess at.

Maybe it's just that summer is almost over, and we're going into our Sophomore year soon. Or, maybe, whatever's happening in our little group is getting to her, too. It can't just be me.

It's late August, and not even dinnertime yet (not even scones time, really), so the sun is still high as I shuffle into the driveway. I watch the Wellbelove's sleek red prius drive away, and notice a figure runners the opposite way. I live in a development, so it isn't unusual to see joggers, and normally I wouldn't give pause. But this one happens to be Basilton Pitch. I'm very aware of how completely out in the open I am as he draws nearer, but I can't take my eyes off of him. I don't really think of jogging of something that requires grace, but there's no other way to describe how Baz does it.

It isn't surprising, really. He's Basilton Pitch, top of the class. I've never seen him ruffled by anything. He keeps earbuds in at all times, except during class. That's the only time he ever talks, too. Most of us keep our distance from him, but every once in awhile some new rumor'll surface--he's gay, he's a vampire, he killed his mum. He never responds to any of it, though. He keeps his mouth shut, and lets people say what they will.

He's untouchable. He's stolid, refined, self-possessed. Above us all. He doesn't need anybody. And I don't understand it at all.

I'm probably staring too obviously, standing near the end of my driveway, and he's only a few houses down. But he doesn't look at me. His black hair is gathered in a neat bun. He's wearing well-fitting black leggings and a loose gray shirt. There doesn't seem to be a drop of sweat anywhere on his body. Again, not surprising.

He finally acknowledges me when I take a step down the driveway, standing in his path. He looks up at me, and slows to a stop. He's dry, not a hair out of place; the only evidence that he's been running is in the faster-than-normal rise and fall of his chest.

"Hey," I say. It feels inadequate.

He pulls one earbud out, holding it near his ear between thin fingertips. "Do you need something, Snow?"

I don't, not really, but there I was anyways. "You-- you should join track," I blurt out. It's the first thing I can think of.

The second thing I think about is the track uniforms. The shorts, to be exact. My face grows a bit warm.

And now Baz is staring at me with one eyebrow raised. "Track," he repeats, as if the request came completely out of nowhere.

"You're running," I say stupidly.

He stares at me.

"And... you know... track."

I should have just gone inside when Dr. Wellbelove dropped me off.

"I don't do school things," he says curtly.

But I can't back down now. And I don't want to, either. "There's a first for everything." I offer him a smile.

Baz seems colder, suddenly. "Fuck off."

He shoves his earbud back in. I step backwards into the driveway to let him jog by, trying to figure out what just happened. Even after he's out of my sight, I still have no answers.

He likes to run.

I add this to the short list of things I know about Baz Pitch.

“Baz was looking forward, listening to the coach. The corners of his mouth were down. His hair was nearly to his shoulders, thin and straight. There were shorter wisps closer to his hairline. I wondered if they stuck to his forehead when he ran. Clearly, I hadn’t been paying enough attention when he’d let me run with him the week before. His cheekbones were high and sharp. His light brown skin was smooth and unblemished. No one could deny that Baz was beautiful.”
