I have been posting several videos lately, but hey, if something is interesting and a video encapsulates that interesting thought, I am going to post it. Anyway, this video explores a number of “rabbit trails” involving patient treatment and ideas for tracking progress. One interesting topic he brings up, which I consider the most interesting is the possibility of collecting data within the clinic! I have not witnessed this in any physical therapy clinics.

The “how” of this idea is still fuzzy to me because of my low experience levels, however, I find research to be fascinating. Why not apply research to what we do within our clinics?

Physical Therapy is becoming more autonomous due to the shift towards vision 2020 ideals. Direct access is significant. The practice of being a Doctor of Physical Therapy and essentially posing as the first line of defense for patients seeking treatment by a physical therapist without a referral is creating a massive influence on how PT clinics function. Marketing is becoming increasingly important.

So what does this all have to do with conducting research within our PT clinics? The interesting thought is to consider how success rates, specific treatments, overall well being, satisfaction rates, etc could be tracked and reported on PT clinic websites or bulletins.

Evidence based practice is significant in helping clinicians determine the most reliable and feasible treatment for patients. Why not provide the public with evidence that PT actually works?

What if patient’s read that “X”% of patients who receive PT treatment at your clinic feel significantly more functional post treatment? If they don’t, then we can use that evidence to solve problems that would otherwise evade attention due to lack of a statistical value.

This is simply interesting thought to chew on mentally. Innovation is more accessible with the rise of direct access physical therapy clinics. Just some thoughts.
