I decided to start sharing some short folk stories from Ukraine wih you🕯️ . . When the sun goes down it descends into a sea that goes around earth like the whites surround the yolk in an egg. There is another world there - so when it is day there, we have nights. Then, the sun nears our East again, so by God’s word a thousand devils lift it up, for it can not rise alone. The sun burns them - they jump into the sea and perish, but of the drops of water another thousand devils are created. This is why it is a sin to shake water off your hands when you wash them, because devils are born of every drop. . . In one village there was a house in which nobody could stay long, because it was a home to a demon. In that village lived, too, a man who was so poor he had nowhere to spend the night. He asked the owner of the land if he could stay in the house. The owner himself cared little for what would happen to the man, and allowed it. . . Joyful, the poor man went to his new home. When he entered it, he saw another person there. The pauper greeted him at the door. The devil went out of his corner and wished him good health in return. When asked to welcome the newcomer into the house, he agreed, too, only adding neither he nor his wife must occupy his corner in any way.  Indeed, the pauper lived there a long time with little trouble. Often would the demon show him his gold and money, on which he always sat in his corner. One early morning the devil got dressed, and said to the man, “It is my turn to raise the sun, and there is no telling if I shall come back, for many are burned by it. I will send a friend to tell you so - then know I am no longer alive.” . . A long time passed without a note from him.
